Do we have to downsize them?
I went and checked out the swamps I'll be hunting to see how much water they had collected and its getting bad. Ike needs to quit dumping on us.

If you hav'nt checked in for a while there was some talk of a team hunt. Our sign in thread is still in this forum. Today it on page 2 Check it out.
I'm going to plan on going out on Oct 5th. Kristie said if we were wanted to come that day she would plan on being home. We could plan other days as well.
Spiritofthewild, Good luck bear hunting that weekend. I shot my first bear in '06 I'll try to attach a short video clip. He was 7yrs old, dressed he weighed 265. live weight est. at 315ish. His skull unofficially measured 19 3/16. Was able to get 2 shots at him although the second turned out not to be needed. 15 and 40 yards. What a RUSH! Got a very nice 1/2 mount of him.

It's almost here boys. I wish everyone a successful and safe season. Been scouting from a distance alot lately in a few of my spots. Sure is getting to be alot of standing water everywhere. Have managed to lock onto several nice bucks, hope they hang around. But am looking forward to getting out in a few days to bag a doe behind the house.

I cant get out. Got to finish a few side jobs so I can get out Oct 1 thru 3. Than again on the 5th. After that I'll hit my local spot a few times, than North again mid month for a few days. Head back North early Nov. (Unless I'm tagged out:D). North again the last few days of bow season into gun. I hope by than I'm the camp bit__... I mean cook. If not I still have a month to go. I'm still trying to fit a day or two to hunt at a friends FNL's place in Lenawee co. and another trip or two out to Kristies. My wife's gonna kill me:rant:. Not really, we have a give - give relationship. I give her money she doesn't give me any crap about hunting...Yeah right, if only it was that easy. Sounds like a good plan, hope it works out for me.

Well, I have some bad news. Yesterday my friend and I went to check out my trail cam for new picture's. When I caught a guy steeling my ladder stand and trail cam. As, we were coming in on my trail. We saw the guy on my trail about 80 yards away from us, which put him only 50 yards from where my stand was. By the time we walked up to where he saw standing, my top half of my ladder was laying on the trail. I ran down the hill to see were he went and to make sure it was my stand that was laying on the trail. Looked at my tree and sure enough. He had used bolt cutters and cut my ladder stand down and also my trail cam that was about 40 yards away. I had all my stuff chained and locked up.
We could not find where the guy ran off too, but i got all my ladder stand back, expect for my pins for the ladder and wrench-it straps. He did get away with my trail cam.:mad::( Why, why.......... just two days before season. Carma, what goes around comes around. His day will come soon!!!!

Man ... that really sucks big time  I know if that would have happened to me , I would be so PISSED.

that is a very crappy way to start off the season!!! I was hunting a piece of private land near Richmond and had somebody attempt to steal my stand one day...but was unsuccessful...two days later after I had reset the stand and fixed the bent ladder, I walked out to my stand only to find that they chainsawed the whole tree down!!! Besides that I had permission to hunt the land, it was a homemade treestand and a cheap ladder....but its the ethics behind it all. some people will get whats coming to them!
Best of luck with the tourney!

Well I had a crappy start of a opener although it was still a good day in the woods.
First off my truck wouldn't start at 4:00 am , had to jump it to get to my hunting spot.
Got out to my stand just before first light and saw three does , none close enough for a shot.
Went to my evening stand and didn't see nothing , when I went back to my truck to home it wouldn't start again
Now I gotta get a new battery for it before I go anywhere :dizzy: oh well better luck next time.

I have had quite a few sightings, a lot of does and a small 6 pt. I am hoping to take out one of those does next week now that I have everything all figured out
I could not figure out what they were all heading to, from all directions they were all going to the same point. An oak tree is dropping acorns like crazy so I set up a stand by that, I never would have thought one tree would attract so much.
Good Luck To Everyone!!

By the way, you might want to re-check your score you put on the scoreboard. I think it should be 13 instead of 12. 5 pts. for a buck and 8 for the points = 13.
Great job on the buck!!

Only 4 pts plus pts on rack for compound. Only traditional archery equipment gets 5 pts.

Only 4 pts plus pts on rack for compound. Only traditional archery equipment gets 5 pts.
You are reading the OH/MS guidelines, not the MS guidelines.
8 + 5 = 13
Here is a cut and paste.
SCORING:
As previously described, each hunter will be allowed to submit 1 antlered and 1 antlerless deer for scoring. You will be allowed to cull your buck if you shoot a second one that is bigger than the first one that you entered.
Antlerless (ANY deer with antlers of LESS than 3 inches in length)=5 points
An antlered deer will= 5 points + the number of tines one inch or longer.

The weekend hunt at Kristies was great , Kristie welcomed cmk and I early sunday morning and told us where the deer were coming from and where they went out.
I set my double bull ground blind up in a corner and sure enough two does were headed my way by 8:30 / 9:00 am.
Once they got within tweny yards one of saw my strange black hole and got spooked taking the other one with her.
The hospitality was excellent and her sister is a great cook , really enjoyed the dinner.
Got a few lessons in horsemanship and got educated on some forensics as well.
Can't wait to go out there again , Kristie if your reading this ... THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Poison Ivy. Showed up on my right forearm first, now it's on my wrist and the back of my hand. Hey guys just checkin in.
I've been seeing lots of movement on my familys 40 acres woods. Mostly does and and young bucks. Passed up a few doe due to the heat.
Tonight I hunted my property for the first time. I set a new stand a little late this year in between a bedding area and a thick swamp and was planning on holding off hunting the stand until the rut. Well I decide to hunt it tonight and was glad i did. Lots of does and 1 hoss. A real tall 9 point just past his ears. Not sure if he was 3.5 or 2.5 but he will be hard to pass on. He was just hanging behind the does and never came close but i know where he lives.

Sorry Chris.....I'll unplug the fencer next time.....the horses are ok with it off while your out there, and you won't have to crawl under the line...... I forgot about all the ivy.......
Hedaman saw some nice does today, and a little buck back in the woods...also found where a red fox has made a burrow in my back pasture....suprised a fox would do that with the horses around, and that the horses would tolerate it....
Anyways, ya'all are welcome anytime.

Yes another great day at Kristies , you all gotta get out there.
Had five does coming at me this morning , took a shot at one ( missjudged the distance ) and missed her.
Then later I saw a good size ( body wise ) four point buck little tines small rack poor fella.
He's gonna find out that when it comes to getting the girls ... size matters
I would like to encourage each and everyone of you to come out there and spend the day
Kristies sister is a great cook ... tonite I had creamy pumpkin sauce over pasta with fried ham fingers , it was just awesome.
Even if you don't get to shoot at a deer , you won't go home hungry.

Got out Sunday, the first 3 and a half hours no deer. 10 squirls at any one time but no deer. At about 6:30 I decided to stand up for the last 1/2 hour or so. I banged my bow on a metal piece on my stand but continued to stand anyway. I looked to the left just in time to see a deer about 40 yards walking away. Another one was still standing there looking at me. Busted! I was pissed to say the least. It walked away also. I figured I'd just ruined my hunt. Than at last light I heard deer walking in from behind me. Heard a grunt from a little further back. More deer walking around and another grunt from my left. It's nearly dark now, to dark to hunt but I figured I would sit for a while and listen. I sounded like a game of tag. Deer running all around crashing thru the leaves, branches breaking and more buck grunts than I ever heard. Infact 2 deer ran past me about 20yrds at 100mph. It would quiet down for a few min. than start again. Listened to this game for about a 1/2hour till they moved on. I wish it wasn't dark it would have been cool to see. It's starting boy's... get into the woods as much as you can in the next few weeks. Good luck

I seen a nice 8 point Sunday morning, so I got out the binoculars and noticed he had an arrow hanging out of him! It appeared that somebody had shot him very high in the front shoulder, and it looked to only have penetrated a couple of inches. He was walking with a pretty bad limp, but I watched him for over an hour as he made his way past me. I can't seem to figure out how somebody could only get that much penetration, the angle of the arrow made it appear to be a pretty close shot....strange, but the reality of a poor shot.....

Steve has little interaction w. this contest outside of the planning part of it, and KJ is just our Mod that helps keeps things (ie: scoreboard) updated...Hads and I are the ones you should address any issues w/.

Guys I scored on 2 does this morning. Shot the first one at about 8am and while i was giving her time to expire another nice one came through. It took some work finding them since they both went into a very thick swamp but i got them. I didn't get any pics yet due to the heat I had to get them right to the cooler. When I pull them out tomorrow I'll put them on the score board.
10 points for the good guys!

nice deer andy
yesterday i spotted a 10 pt in a soybean field coming home from another property. i have permission on this one, i snuck out there around a thicket. After losing track of him, i blew a doe grunt and that hog blasted through the thicket and ran threw the field, a doe jumped out and he took off after her, i turned around a 6 pt also came to the grunt. I stalked up to him, he was making a scrape, i got to within 30 yards, and drew back, but he never presented a shot, it was one of the most thrilling experiences ever though, closing 150 yds into 30 yards, and to see to nice bucks made it even better, now i just have to tag one :)

It's been a week and a half now and I still feel sick. Went out to my brother-in-laws to hunt 2 Sundays ago. Thought we would try something different. Set two decoys in the yard and one on the otherside of the tree line on an alfalfa field. Had some calls and scent out. About 5:30 I heard leaves crunching behind me. I turned around and all I could see was a very large set of antlers about 40 yards behind me heading away from me. I grunted once he stopped and looked in my direction. Grunted twice more he turned and headed in my direction.
I had a broad side shot at 20 yards but I couldnt stop him, at about 25 yards quartering away he stopped. Just 6ft from my decoy. I was at full draw...picked a hair to shoot and let one fly...At the exact time he jumped forward. I hit him much farther back than I wanted but at that angle I should still caught some vitals.
He took off, circled around and ran right under me. In fact so close there was blood on the ladder of the stand I was sitting in. The arrow didn't pass thru and was at a right angle to the deer witch led me to beleve it deflected off a rib. I had a fairly good blood trail. Waited about an hour than began tracking. I followed the trail about 400yrds till it began getting dark.(didn't have a light w/me) went back to get a light and my brother-in-law.
Me, my brother-n-law and his son picked up the trail for about another 100yrds. Found the spot where he bedded. Than nothing. The blood was dry on the leaves where he bedded so I don't think we bumped him. It was 3hrs after the shot. We looked on our hands and knees for 2 1/2 more hours...nothing! My brother in law looked the next day for a couple of hours and glassed every field nearby...nothing. How long is long enough? We had about 13 man hours. I feel, because I didn't find him, it wasn't enough. Even though we truned that area upside down.
I think that deer was the big 9pt the neighbor seen acouple days before. Damn I hate myself!
Buckgrunt77
11-05-2008, 07:01 PM
I'm sorry to hear about that, I've been there and that's the worst feeling a hunter can have.........I've learned that if I ever hit one behind the ribs I don't even begin to look for a minimum of 12 hours and I've had success finding them this way. Based on what you said, I'd bet that buck isn't too far from where you were at, its a deadly shot, but not always a trackable one.....hang in there.

It's been about 18 years that I have not recovered a deer that I had shot. I don't take low percentage shots. I would have rather watched him walk away than have something like this happen. Over the years I've learned alot about tracking wounded deer and consider myself pretty good at it.
Hind sight is 20/20. What if this happened or that? Many statements have been made over the years in this situation. I did what I thought was best that night. I guess it is what it is. Hopefully something like this doesn't happen to me (or anybody) again.

Good luck in the morning guys! I'll be back out 1 more time tonight with my bow trying to get the big boy. Saw him again last night just could'nt get him close enough. I thought I had him comming in when the Doe he was with turned and he started coming to my grunt. He made it to about 45 yards out and then he spotted 2 more doe to my east in the cut corn. Once he saw them the game was over for me. I tried talking to the doe but they did'nt want nothing to do with me. I thought I had the bigger of the 2 doe convinced with the fawn bawl but she did'nt take the bait. Oh well one more shot tonight for me to put some team points up.
I'll be out with my Omega sitting in the rain in the morning.

Hey guys sorry i haven't posted lately I've been doing lots of hunting.
I should have choosen combo hunter.
I took a 7 point opening day that I had been passing on in bow season.
I had my 12 year old nephew sitting with me and I let our excitement
get to me.
Thanksgiving morning I shot a nice buck I thought was a 2 1/2 YO 8 point but as it turned out its left main beam was broke off 2 inches above the brow tine. The buck was trailing a doe across a cut corn field 145 yards out so I didnt have a lot of time to look him over.
Yesterday morning me and my brother in law shot a doe a piece. He shot the big girl of the group and the other 5 didnt know what to do. I picked out the biggest of the 5 still standing and dropped her at 95 yards.
So for the year so far I shot 2 does within 25 yards with my Lights Out Bear and 1 doe at 95 yards, 1 buck at 120 yards, and 1 buck at 145 yards with my 50 cal. Omega.
I'm taking 5 days off till MZ season opens up in my zone and am going to try and fill my last 2 doe tags.
I hope everyone has had a safe and enjoyable season, and good luck in MZ season.
