Sick as a dog thurs fri sat and sunday yet I fdragged my sorry butt out sunday in pouring rain to sight in my MUZZY for the early doe only to have it fall off the rest and throw my sights off on the last shot so I am going to try and get a chance to sight it in again today tommorow or wed or be forced to use my shotgun .. OOH WELL decisions decisions .
Hunting thursday morn till about 7:15 7:30 and then go to work and back in woods by 3:00 or so ....
Hoping to score a doe early. Maybe 3 or 4 for freezer all depends ... Got tags just need opporotunity if not it should be a good season anyway.

Better late than never...since I'll be getting the big 11 pointer this year.. and then I woke up. haha. We have corn this year so I'll have a lot of deer around. Usually I don't see many bucks until the rut starts. I am very interested to see how my habitat changes made earlier this year effects my hunt. I have 30 more bushes/trees going in sometime in the next month, but they won't have an effect for another couple of years.

And no offense I make sure to stay away from the wife during january-february.....lol I already had one child during deer season (November 25th 2003) and plan on making my next baby during season to prevent the birth of the next one being then....dont think im heartless and cruel but its the truth! I just can't get pumped up until it gets cold and the leaves are gone. Last year I had 7 deer in front of me on November 29 (I was going to take the big doe with my hand gun if she came close enough but she didn't) so I'm not worried about waiting to take one.

Figures I go and hunt last evening and I get a nice 8 point less then 50 yrds away. Did have some smaller fawn does last night but not 1 for me. had a larger looking doe and upon ispection with binos and yep you guessed it a button buck so all deer yesterday got a free pass. Hopefully this evening or this weekend will tell.

Took a little doe last night (I'm guessing last years fawn) at about 6:45pm.
I got sat down about 5:45pm in one of our elevated blinds on a bean field that has a 1 acre food plot runnng along the edge of the woods. At 6:30pm she popped out of the treeline along the beans with a fawn and started feeding directly at me. I didn't dare move so I just watched them feed for about 10 minutes. Then they got to the clover and luckily (for me) began heading away from me. Once she had her head turned I was able to get the gun into position and she offered me a quartering away shot at about 35 yds. I hit both lungs and she piled up quickly after about 50 yards.
Overall a good hunt. It was just great being out there.
For the record, my orange vest is in the mule, I took it off to field dress her.

I bought the $30 or so .44 rounds of Winchester Partician gold 250 grain bullets this year. I use the Hornady SST's in my 12 gauge slug gun. I see that Hornady has come out with a .44 slug that is $20 for a box. I am going to use the Hornady .44 round when I use up the rest of my .44 Winchester box. I didn't hear any shooting or hear of anybody taking a doe in my area. A bunch of people around here didn't even know about the early season. They thought that I was kidding them when I told them about the short early season. Most of them thought that I was talking about the early youth season.

I havent made up my mind about the shells for the .41 I have been using 195 grain hand loads but they are gone and my guy isn't around no more to get me some new ones. As far as the 12 guage slugs we have all been using ESTATE brand maximum velocity ( 1610 ) and we got 6 total this weekend
( only took the 2 in my photos ) and all it took was for this slug was a goods aim it performed beautiful out of the smooth slug barrels of all the 870's used this weekend. Best of all they are only $2.95 for 5 slugs at VOITS and they are made in USA to boot. Word of mouth got me trying them and I will use them again.
Did get up to Kingston yesterday for evening hunt and my buddy had a pretty small doe he took. CAN YOU SAY HOT ...
I didn't see any myself so we ended up closing the tavern down and BS'd until almost 4 in Morn. So we never made it out to morning hunt. ( SEEMS LIKE AFTER YOU GET SOME MEAT IN FRIDGE IT IS SO EASY TO GET INTOXICATED AND PARTY A LITTLE TOO MUCH AND SHRUG OFF MORNING HUNTS :SHOCKED::yikes::yikes: :D:D.)
Spent day processing the quarters and grinding up the burger so that is done and I saved myself prolly $100 and got MY MEAT. Got 4 gallon bags of steaks and 5 quart bags of back strap steaks and 11 2.5 to 3 lb packs of burger and I am in heaven.
Hell as I am writing this I am eating the tendies and a few slices of back strap.
Well still got tomorrow around here after work so still might try for 1 more and then BOW SEASON IS UPON US AND SO IS TURKEY. I am so ready for this season it is going to go by so fast.
If not I am just going to have more ops through the rest of the season.

55 yards...wow. I have always figured about 40 yards is max for me. I shoot an older bow at 74 lbs and 265-270 fps (on a chronograph). Anything past that and I figure that they will move too much due to the bow noise. I'm sure that i'd launch one 45 yards or so if he was big enough.....

Way to go perchaman!!!
I am debating heading back out tonight. My dad killed a mature doe Sat AM and he gave it to me so I have that and my doe quarted and cooling in frig to be processed tonight. Very tempting to go out and try for 1 more though, that would definatly take the pressure off come November.

I hear ya man But worse case senario dude I can come over and help you eat the extras if you need the help. i just feel that since the family eats it why let the freezer be empty. I also have my dad and brothers and sisters who eat venison as well and are all too lazy to go ouyt and get there own So I get raided and have a good reason to harvest what we eat and I will still be able to wait out a larger buck and not be forced to shoot the first MEAT that walks by.

Well ended up not being able to hunt a hotspot last evening and went to a corn field and ended up in back of it waiting on the deer to leave there beds in the hay marsh / hardwoods.
1 guy went well to the right in a treestand 500 yrds or so away in the back 80 corn field the other got to stay in front between two cornfields and I since I was the INVITED one got to take the far back of the cornfield as I stated to wait for the does to leave there beds.
Well I sneak the edge back to the Haymarsh and find some neck high weeds over looking some well worn paths. Tuck in behind a taller bush between 3 of the trails in the weeds and started my wait for the deer to start the migration that is immenent in my mind.
A little hot so I unbuttoned my flannel and was trying to be as still as possible when it happend. MOSQUITOS thought I was a steak and the menu item for the night. Well due to the thinking that I was going to my other spot I had no thermacell or spray packed so I gently blew on them and swatted them and begged them to leave me alone. No avail. After what seemed like an eternity it began to start getting dark and cooler out. Mosquitos must've all burst from overeating because they were begining to diminish.
Suddenly I get a slight glint of grayish brown throught the bush dirrectly ahead of me on the other side of the hill and hear the weeds slowly parting.
Silence ....... More silence ...............
Snort wheeze stomp not 25 or 30 yrds up in front of bush then a helicopter sound goes off in my ear and a few stings to my cheeck and ear..
Got to stay still ....
Snort wheeze stomp I know it smells me but it wants to see where I am at and it can't so it is pissed I see it leaped once and is just on other side of hill in to tall grass ... Can't see what it is OOOUUUCCCHHH slap swat now I got blood on my hands from those vampirsquitos on my face.
Snort Wheeze stomp continues for 3 minutes or so and I can't get a glimpse. I figure it will back up and swing to the left or right to try and see what the new smell is so I ready myself for either one. I got the perfect spot it is prolly 25 yrds and can't see me until it pokes its head out to the left or right of the bush and when it does......... BAM
But wait the snorts and wheezes are getting quieter NOOO it is walking in a direct path down hill which it came where I can't shoot. FIGURES I pick a damn bush this time when I shouldve picked the edge of the hardwoods and seen it circling the field.
OOH WELL another wonderful night in the woods with my heart reacing like a funny car is still better than anything else I know. Also gained some access to a nice property which I was invited to hunt again. Hopefully by then the corn will be down a little and the hay dies off some to offer a better view and more ops.
Jekart I hope you fared better than me last night as far as harvest... But as Far as I am concerned was a night well spent and really has me pumped for OCTOBER 1st..... Come on boy lets take this damn contest.
Jekart
09-23-2008, 02:10 PM
The hunt went real well, unfortunatly the harvest part didn't happen. I spotted a few deer in the beans, including a nice 2.5 year old buck and 2 other 1.5's as well as a couple does with fawns but none of them offered up a clean shot. Still was nice to be out, I sat in a new stand and feel really good about the location. The deer were coming from where I expected, they just never came into range.
I am off now until Nov-15. I have 2 more sets I decided to put up on the Barry Count farm so I will be getting that done. Fortunatly we don't have any bowhunters on this farm so it will have some time to cool down before Nov.
I am debating now weather or not I want to head North for the opener with the activity we have had down here. This year is the first time my "Hot Spot" has had anything planted other than hay, it is corn this year I think that might be the ticket. Decision, decisions!!!

For me I will be in a tree on OCT. 1st in the afternoon to see if I can't get tied into a nice deer with some pointed sticks. And I will hunt through nov 14th as much as possible and then trade the stick in for a more range potent piece of equipment ;).

We could use the points and I know where the meat can go if not wanted :corkysm55:corkysm55

Ah....I love the interest of other teams in our thread.....this slowly sucks away their hunting time and makes them lose sight of their goal....which is to try to beat us.......I am sure that once the bow opener comes and passes the amount of deer posted to the scoreboard will tell the tale of who is really the best team and in the words of the great Ricky Bobby....."With all due respect Mr. Members of other teams....you all suck!"

See problem is I wake up in the morning and piss excellence......and most of the other hunters at my deer camp wake up pissing last nights alcohol to try to hide the hangover just to sleep in their blinds......and thats why I am the only man at my camp who gets a deer and their money at the poker table every november......I shoot more deer stalking the woods on foot during bow season the last five years than all 15 of the guys at firearm deer camp in the last 10 years....irony? I think cruel yes but when you wait for them to come to you...you wait for a ghost.....good luck men!

Well nothing good to report yet. Lots of wind lots of small does and a few small bucks. No bucks in bow range. Could've shot all the does I wanted though perfect broadside trail and each one stopped to check out a small scrape that a SPIKE made right after I got there.
Might have to poke one of them does I got the itch. Hope fully some nicer bucks swing by next weekend or during the week by the house. Nice to be mosquito free ....
Anyone else get out ?

Came across a good recipe for you guys.
I thought as long as you had to carry Percha the whole season (you must have offended the gods) you might as well enjoy a good "Tag" recipe.:lol:
Heres your Gumbo recipe that you will get used to eating.
biggest pot you can find
8 quarts of water
salt
pepper
garlic powder
basil
deer tags you were not able to fill (wich means all of them)
simmer for 1 1/2 hours while dreaming of venison
turn on your favorite whitetail show to watch and enjoy your tag soup.)

Oh I know how that is for sure I don't have a personal deer farm of my own to hunt on I have to actually go find them. One day I will be as lucky as some of you old rich dudes but for now I guess I will just go out and do my thing to keep the family fed and keep my sprits high.
Since this is my third year bow hunting I do see wayyyyyyyyy more bucks and get out so much more. I have yet to get a buck in front of an arrow but have taken does.
I guess I spend to much time roaming around the state visiting friends and taking kids out and spending time hunting with them instead of concentrating on Bucks in a single area. My fault but I like the commradery of hunting and sharing memories with new hunters.
Ooh well I still have a good time and will be forever in awe of those mythical creatures they call BOONER BUCKS and P&Y BUCKS :yikes::yikes:
Until one gets 2 close. Only have seen them in the last 3 yrs and I will tag one soon enough.

Well boys, I had 5 bucks come by Saturday morning, all within 25 yards. I shot the nice 8 point, but had a small deflection along the way. Best I can tell, I hit him in the front shoulder, or more likely the leg bone. Zero blood and no deer.:(
So now I have a wounded 8 point out there I have to chase.:(

Good luck on getting that 8 point.
Went out last night for a turkey / deer night and seen zilch on the turkey  They have been around every single day morning and evening. Someone must've interupted them this AM is all I can think of ......
Did see a nice buck but he would not come close enough for a shot. I would grunt and he would jump and then circle and grunt and look all around but then he lost interest when a few does came around. Did have like 6 yearlings and a few older does meander in close but I was there for a turkey or a buck or both last night. Will be back out there Friday for the rest of the hunt unless I can get out of work real early one day before Friday :evilsmile..
Good luck to all.

Wow Nice one.
Well it seems as if there is a repeat of the last hunt this weekend. Yearlings and does out in daytime on saturday. I saw no turkey yet My buddy did harvest a Hen to be eaten and he is havin it mounted.
Saturday night almost smashed into a few deer while out driving they are moving alot and late around me.
Well since my buddy Moved away from his wife and kids last week after 13 yrs of marriage our camp had a few drinks and talked well into Sunday Morning. I took a quick nap and headed home and never hunted Sunday. OOH well it sucks that they ended but they ended on good terms I would say but he is feeling guilty now I guess and wants closure in his own mind.
OH well I will be out in the evenings around here harrassing the local population as well until next weekend where I will be going ------ somewhere to hunt I am sure I will be seeing more bucks soon as they are starting to get real horney and wandering around more.
Any way good luck I had a whole long story to go along but strayed quickly.

Also a nice doe was taken in my oxford spot and the owner said there are a lot of smaller bucks starting to pop out early.Too bad I won't be back till later in the season. Maybe go to unionville this weekend or back to kingston depending on what happens during the week..

Here's one for the team....... I got him on Weds. night 19th.
Baraga Co. 6 point. Really slow this year in our area of the Western UP. DNR check station in Marquette told me today that deer harvest numbers were way down this year due to sever winter last year, as well as new tag system up there. The Mackinaw bridge count was also down about 20% today when I came across. I saw this buck on opening morning, then never saw another buck until he came back on the fifth evening. Between our camp and the neighbors which comprise about a square mile of private land and about 9 hunters........there were only two bucks shot as of this evening.......mine being the largest.
