Hey guys! Just got back from Bear camp. Shot my first bear. About a 280 lb male. Shot it with a bow at about 20 yds. Pretty exciting when you have a few bears on the same bait. Especially when two cub run up the tree your in! Pretty hairy for my first time.
Anyway, I'll be out on Thursday for a doe then I'll be going to Wisconsin over the weekend to check on my lease and maybe get a hunt in. Check in with you guys then. Good luck to those who head out for the early anterless season!

I won't be going out in the early season. I'm saving the 40 I've got for my boy to have first crack. I'm goinig to wait for the youth hunt and see what happens for him before I spook anything. I won't get out until archery is upon us, which won't be long at all.

I wanted to get my trail cam card to see what was lurking, but the monsoon kept me out of the field. Crazy rain down here this weekend. I think we had a total of 10 inches between Friday to Sunday.

Alright guys. I haven't gotten pix from all of you for my first idea, (not so sure it would work anyway) so I threw this one together with a picture I had. What do you think? We can add it to our signatures if we all like it. If someone else wants to try something, give it a crack!

Yup, works for me too.
Talked to a few neighbors tonight while checking cameras. They said there are two very nice 3 1/2 yr old 8 points running around. Havent seen those two yet, but did catch a glimpse of a good 10 a little while ago. Sounds like there are a few shooters close to home! Maybe I'll stick around instead of driving 1 1/2 hrs to camp every night.
Good luck to those who head out for a doe or two tomorrow.

Well I coulda put us on the bpard but camera batteries were dead, took a nice doe last night, saw 7 bucks, and about 15-20 does. @ 135-140in. bukcs, and 2 twin 110ish 8's. I will have to take my doe for points another day, no big deal. Anyone else make it out?

Too bad you didn't get the pictures, but it sounds like you're not too worried about getting another to take her place. It's a long season ahead of us.

I went out to my trail cam today and confirmed my suspicions. I forgot to put a new memory card in the last time I was out there, which was two weeks ago. Still see plenty of tracks in there though, so they are using it pretty well. We put in an enclosure to see how much growth I'd be gettting if the deer weren't browsing it off. The Winter Pea plants are all the way to the top of the cage now, which is at least five foot tall I think. The rest of the stuff the deer can reach is not over your ankles. They are browsing it pretty good I'd say.

Saw a few nice 3 1/2 yar olds but I figure I'd roll the dice and see what comes up in a month. Tough to let em both walk!! Time to consentrate on Michigan, and winning this contest, now!! Good Luck!

I sat till 9:30 this morning, saw 1 large doe @ daybreak and had a yote lay down with his head resting on the tree I was sitting in for about 5 minutes before first light.

I had 3 little bucks (4pt/6pt/half rack 8pt) within 20 yards @ 6:30pm for awhile but their dad never showed himself.

That north wind was chilly and the gusts probably weren't helping the deer movement. I can't remember the last bow opener I was so cold...

I took a doe out Saturday morning. Went out hunting with Kozbow on his property. We both took a nice does. Saw one or two small bucks chasing a doe with a couple yearlings around in the soybeans about 20 minutes before this one gave me a shot. Went out this morning up in the Allegan State Game area. Didn't see anything but squirrels, but it sure was a nice morning.

Nice doe Horseshoe (it makes spending money on a new hunting toy worth it!!!) How far of a shot was it?? How about those RAGE 2-blader's did she go far?? Did she leave a "Good" blood trail?? You might want me to try some of that back strap for (toughness) as big as that ***ch was the meat may be "chewy"

Nice job Horseshoe! I took a doe this weekend myself. 30yds away and put the Rage in her cage! Double lunged, she only ran about 50 yards and dropped on the two track! Easiest tracking job and recovery I've ever had! I passed 2 small 8 points, a 7, 2 forks and a spike. All were within 40 yards. Saw two shooters but they never got any closer than about 90yds. Just have to figure out how to post that picture now for our points. Good luck the rest of the week!

Horseshoe
10-06-2008, 12:09 PM
I just clipped the bottom of her spine on the entrance, so she didn't go anywhere but about 10 yards down the hill. Blood trail wasn't an issue at all. The doe Kozbow shot left a very impressive blood trail as well. A two blad Rage through the vitals is very devastating, I'll tell you that. The Airborne is 1for 1.
I'll be waiting for the fatty Bucky! I had some backstrap last night and it was wonderful. I've got 4 pounds of jerky prepped to go in the oven tonight. She was good sized but I'd only put her at around 3 years old based on her teeth. We'll have someone take a look at it that knows what they are looking at. I just noticed that they are still pretty sharp. Now that doe I shot up in Allegan last year, her teeth looked like Tbone from Monster Bucks.
Nice job to you too Justin!

Not that kind of "fatty" I gave that up years ago. A "fatty" is a tube or chub of breakfast sausage rolled up or "stuffed" with what ever you want to put in it and smoked. They are the BOMB.Horseshoe's suggestion was Jalapeņos,cheese and roasted garlic. So I smoked him some for calling in Mr.Double Beard. Now his recipe is me and the boy's favorite.
I owe him for re- fletching some arrows for me.

I never hunt a stand 2 days in a row so I didn't sit the stand yesterday only to find it gone today. For the next week I will be hauling my pop up blind in and out of this particular piece of property and ignoring my other property's waiting for someone to hopefully come back. God help this person if he does... I am sick and effin' tired of thieves!:rant:/

I hear ya! I've had one Reconyx camera stolen and one smashed this year on two different private properties. 1k worth of equipment down the drain!

Horseshoe

I've had a stand set stolen off of public property down here and it definitely stings. As a matter of fact that was two years ago and I still haven't hunted back there since. It's only three miles from my house, but just not worth the aggravation. Now 1K worth of cameras is a whole nuther story. I'd be livid over that. I guess that's why I've got $50 invested in the one I've got out. I don't trust people any more. I'm sure the first yokel that stumbles on it will make off with it, although any real hunter wouldn't dream of it.
Got a message from a friend who says he whacked a big one yesterday. He says it's an 8 that is over 150 inches. 25 inch main beams and 14" G2s. I haven't seen pictures yet, but he sounds like an absolute hog of an 8. So they're out there to be had, do let that mid-season lull get ya down! He says he spotted him in some cut corn and stalked up on him through the standing corn. That had to be sweet.
Do you need some help with the pic Justin, or are you just waiting until you have some time to post it up?

archerjustin
10-09-2008, 08:22 AM
Finally got the pic uploaded and in the scoreboard thread. Now it's time for some antlers!
Horshoe - your buddies buck sounds awesome! I know a guy who shot a 168" 8 pt that he had no idea it lived behind his house! Any 8pt over 150" is truely a once in a lifetime buck! Can't wait to see the pics!

I can feel your anticipation. I'm heading out to Montana on November first, and am really anticipating that trip. Unfortunately for me that is when the bucks really get fired up around here, good for you though! I've only been out for three sits so far, but hope to slide out tomorrow after work. It will be the first sit in a new stand, so who knows. I did see 6 deer on my way home from work today. Made me wish I was in the stand. The weather is starting to get "right". We need to start slapping some bucks up on the board.

Well... I had a small 10 pt at 20yds this morning. Facing me dead on. Walked directly toward me, stopped at 20yds., stood there for about 3-4 minutes, turned around completely and walked right back down the path he came from. Not a giant by any means, but he was a 3 1/2 yr old 120" buck and I've already polished off the tenderloin from my doe! Saw him again skirting around me at about 80yds. Wind was in my favor and there is no way he picked me off, I'm nestled tightly in a cedar. Must be that 6th sense I've seen so many times before.
Tonight I passed on a fork at 10 yds. Didn't see much movement only 3 deer.
This weekend looks to be a good one though. Good luck to all!

That'll get your blood boiling. What the heck is he wearing anyway!!??
I passed on the biggest 6 point I've ever seen. I'm guessing he would score 90" - 100". His spread was outside his ears! Wasn't a traditional six though. 4 on one side and a fork on the other. The fork side was missing the brow and the G3. Thought maybe he had an injury durring the beginning stages of antler growth. If he would've been an 8 point he may have made book!
We'll see what comes along this week. I can't seem to find the big one. I've passed about 8-9 different younger bucks. Seems like there aren't any mature bucks this year on our property. Same thing can be said for the other guys that hunt our parcel.
I'll be leaving this Friday for Wisconsin so I've only got 4 days to get it done before I leave. I'll be back for the first week in November though.

Cant hunt here, but had some does I believe walking down in the ravine between my hous and Hines dr. I said to myself the other day I have not seen one buck, believe it or not the next morning I left early for work and a tall six point walk really slow in front of my car stopped, turned on the brights he just looked and kept on walking across Ann Arbor trail. Got a nice order from F+T clothes wash and some scent killer to put on before I walk in. Looking forward to a nice drive up north and QUALITY TIME.

I'm thinking it could likely be the culprit, but I suppose it could be coincidence. It looks like a bullet proof vest to me, which I suppose would be handy if you were stealing property from hunters.
I went out Saturday morning and once again didn't see a thing. It's been a very slow year for me so far, except for the hunt on Koz's place where I got the doe. Well guys been a real slow year for me so far. I've passed on several small bucks but haven't even really laid eyes on a shooter yet. Usually, in previous years, I've seen at least 3-4 shooter candidates by now.

I've hunted the same farm for quite a few years now, and this is easily the least amount of scrapes and rubs I've seen at this point in the year in recent memory. I'm starting to hope Charlie Alshimer is right (moon theory) about the rut starting a little late this year with the hunters moon occurring so late in November.

All well, can't wait for Halloween and the all day sits to begin.;)

I'm heading out to Montana on Saturday morning for a mule deer hunt, so I'm going to be out of here for a week or so. I haven't been seeing much at all on my leased property. I did find out that the picture is the landowners son, and it is just a weighted vest he wears for working out. I did get some more pictures of the neighbor kids wandering around on my food plot last week. Frustrating. Right now I'm fighting off a terrible cold, which I hope to have whipped by Satuday or it's going to be a long ride to Montana. I doubt I'll do any whitetail hunting until I go up to the UP for deer camp on Nov 12th. Hopefully I'll see some deer up there, because I haven't seen a single deer my last five sits.
Prime time while I'm gone. Good luck to all who are out there hunting!

Horseshoe, have a good safe and healthy hunt out in Montana. If you can get a few country pic's. Always wanted to go there.

Sat all day today and never saw a deer until the last 10 minutes of shooting light tonight. Had a six point chase two does right by my stand within 10 yards grunting like crazy and then I had another buck come in a few minutes later as I was trying to leave my stand. I have no idea what it was (too dark) but it followed the same path as the 2 does and 6 point. I only know it was a buck because it too was grunting quite a bit and I could hear it's antlers clanking against the brush as it walked through.

I'm sitting again all day tomorrow in another spot, hopefully I see a little more action...

Radiohead -
Congrats on your first bow kill! It will be the first of many I'm sure.

Just got back from Wisconsin. Another year with nothing to show for me but my brother in law shot a whopper. 152" 8 point. I passed 3 deer between 120" and 130" waiting for the big boy. I had a mid 140" 8 come in one night. Had him at full draw at 17 yards and needed literally one more step to clear his vitals. Never happened but I did get it all on video which was pretty cool! The second to last night we were there we filmed what we thought was a 160" 8 point. Buggest 8 I've ever seen! Had him at 100 yards or so but couldn't get him away from his doe. All in all it was a good trip, just wasn't able to fling an arrow. Maybe next year will be my year.
Leaving for Missouri in about a week and a half so I've got a little time to hunt around home.
Good luck everyone!

Picked up another Doe tonight. I didn't enter her into the scoring because I think we can only enter 1 Doe and 1 Buck if I am reading the rules properly.

Hi guys, I'm back from Montana and had a great trip. Congrats to Radiohead on a couple of nice does and that first bow kill. There's nothing like bowhunting for sure. Sounds like you had a good hunt in Wisconsin Justin. I hope a big one walks out in front of you here in Michigan. (Actually I hope a big one walks out in front of all of us on team BBD)The time is right for it to happen and I think the falling temps should have them on their feet. It looks like I got out of Montana in time to avoid the major snow falls they just had. Maybe some of that cold is on the way here now. Here is a pic of my buck. We spotted him out in a hay field feeding and paying a little too much attention to one doe in particular. When I saw his body size I knew he was big enough for me. Took him with my 300 mag at 340 yards. It's nice to be able to reach out there and touch someone. So much different than archery!

Great buck Horseshoe! I LOVE hunting out west. This was the first year in the last 4 I havent been out that way. Can't wait to get back. Was this a "do it yourself hunt" or through an outfitter?
I've basically got two days to make it happen here in Michigan. Leaving for Missouri on Wednesday. Seeing plenty of deer but all are young. All the 3 1/2 yr olds or older have been out of range. Most frustrating year I've ever had. Hope one of you boys can connect soon. We need to lay down some deer!

No luck for me guys, will go again after firearms for some late season bow hunting. The weather was changing alot. Went back to my tree got the climber going, weather was horrible at least for me. Started off decent but changed, got really windy started raining which I was not prepared for. Saw a couple of does out in the cornfield came out in a different direction. Mon and Tues was really warm 65 degrees or so. A fog/mist came off of lake Michigan, watched it come in 15 minutes later could not see 15yards in front of me.
My trip got cut short a day or two, but wife was home alone with the 4 kids, but it was a nice trip.

Justin, it was a guided hunt. Saw an incredible number of deer and had a great time. Hopefully I'll do some public land hunts in the future. I've got one preference point in Colorado. I figure in four or five years I should be able to get on a good hunt.

Tomorrow morning I'll be heading for the U.P. With their new antler restrictions I should be bring back a 6 point or better. Or nothing I suppose! The area we hunt is usually pretty good to me, but there are no guarantees. I figured you guys would have a few bucks on the ground by the time I got back. I guess we're all going to tag out at once! Have a great hunt guys.

it wasnt with a bow but i logged a nice 8 point for us. Would have passed him in bow but to tempting after everything goes wrong, oipeaning morning, I get to my stand, afte ri put in the canoe paddled about .5 miles up stream, then across a lake another .5 miles, in the wind sat. no easy task. Anywho, get there and its gone. Middle of a huge private land swamp, was there thurs. night I could see it from one of my front stands on the other side of the swamp...aka. easy access stands, but this one is gone. So I was pissed beyond belief, 2nd stand taken from that tree, neither one has made it more then a week, and worst part is I am 999% sure of who is doing it. but steaming mad i went ovcer to 2 small pines and stood there after 15 minutes of feeling bad for myself and pacing around the tree. 2 minutes later, bang! got him, 7 steps, 7:04 am.

I took the best I've taken in the UP so far on opening morning. He walked in at 10:50 AM. I thought he was an 8 but was surprised to see that he had double drop tines that both were broken off, but well over an inch in length. I was extremely pleased with him.

Then on day two at 7:50 I had this 5 pointer come in. Probably should have let him walk, but a bird in the hand.

I think I read somewhere in the rules that you cannot change the posting once you posted it, but you guys can take his 5 pointer anyway!!!

Hey, didn't you guys have "bow only" guy on your team???? I hope he is not logging gun points???

I put the wrong team number on my entry. I sent the administrator a PM and he says he'll take care of it. I guess I was subconsciously trying to help out team 23 since Kozbow was so nice to let me take my doe off his property earlier in the year. I've come to my senses however!
Sure looks like it would have been a good morning to be in the woods. Sleeping in wasn't so bad either, but I'd rather be outdoors. I've got one of my bucks thawing in the garage right now, so I'll be out doing some butchering this afternoon. I hope to take my boy out tomorrow evening to see if we can't get him his first deer.

Way to go Mossyed! Good job on the buck. That looks like a pretty nice 6 point, and with a bow.
I had another bad experience out on my leased property. I'm done with it. Spend good money to lease it, spend money and labor to plant it, then some slob neighbor comes and sits in my stand and shoots a deer. Leaving pop cans in the stand no less. Nothing like taking your son out with high hopes only to discover the neighbors have been hunting the property that you've left as a sanctuary since mid October. I hope he chokes on it. OH well. Time to move on. I'm going to look into leasing somewhere else next year.
Where's everyone else at? Let's not give up on this thing. Lots of hunting yet to be done. Let's put the smack down guys!
