How many of you small game hunt throughout deer season... I ask
this because I've always felt a little weird about small game hunting
through deer season. Should I? ;)

Thanks

Because of the small window of opportunity for the regular firearm season, I will only coon hunt if I target any thing other than deer. Even if I am tagged out. I do not mind someone else small game hunting though. It's crazy but some people believe it's illeagle to hunt small game during the firearm season. I also hunt with a bow but extend the same curtousy to bow hunters. After two weeks in I still try to avoid people, but small game hunters would have no season if we stayed out during all the deer seasons.

I was talking to a hunter a few years ago. He planned a grouse hunt in N WI with his dog. When I heard the date I asked him if he knew that was the Sat firearms deer opener? He didn't. Nothing wrong with it but I told him I'd try to find a different date. Even after the 1st few days would help. Much depends on where you go.

There are 60 days to hunt small game up until Nov 15.

COMMON SENSE and COURTESY both will tell you to stay out of the woods from Nov 15-30.

To me deer season is for deer hunting but to each his own. I persoanlly would not feel comfortable walking around disturbing other hunters that are hunting deer but then you most likely will be pushing deer to them but ya just might want to hit the ground when the lead starts flying:yikes:

as a curtesy i try to avoid bow hunters during the season. i have several areas i like to hunt that get little preasure. i try to keep my dog out of the woods during those times too . she is a squirrel dog and so many hunters don;t even know squirrel dogs exist.
i personaly have very little interest in hunting deer any more, and only hunt them to spend time with friends that do enjoy it.
i have to admit to being a little .... uncomfortable with deer hunting being raised to the level of a superior hunt. though i understand its in the economics of the thing.
and of course as long as deer hunters stay focused on such a small part of the hunting experiance, it keeps them out of the way of those of us who seek the total hunting challenge of small game .

Rodger that, JW.

And my birdogs are way too important to me. to risk their lives in range of some trigger happy nimrod. Some awfully good hunting dogs have been shot under the excuse of "running deer".

Grouse season is closed during the Firearm Deer season in MI, so it is a moot point, anyway. As far as other small game hunting, if someone wants to do it and it is in season, I see no problem with it. The deer hunters don't own the woods.

i sure would be upset if someone shot my dog, but i think it would be better to get the law involved than to go to jail for the rest of my life for a dog.

Very true.... but the same thing if you say stay out of the woods during bow season... or during muzzle loader... I feel If you don't have common sense and nor courtesy you don't belong in the woods in the first place. The woods are a place for all hunters to enjoy... the last you want to have to deal with is a half wit, A-hole.

I honestly didn't think I would get this much feedback... Some excellent points are being made though...

Nov. 15-30, and probably Dec. 5 - 21 I'll be after deer myself.
I guess another point is, if you completely stop during the entire deer season you'll lose close to 3 months. And maybe I feel a little odd because that's how I've been made to feel by listening to the "almighty" deer hunters that do nothing else than go after deer. If that's your game fine, but I don't liked being knocked because I enjoy both... I dunno...

Thanks for the replies... :)

All upland bird hunting is closed during the firearms deer season. You can hunt waterfowl, rabbits, and squirrels during the firearm deer season.

The only small game I hunt now is turkey and waterfowl but not very often. As much I hate being bothered during bow season, I still realize everyone needs land to do their own thing. Land is in short supply for everyone.

If the dog is running deer why would you shoot the dog when he just put a perfectly good deer in front of you?

I have seen dogs, cats, bear, coyotes and even Grandpa in the John Deer Gator come by me in my hunting stands. Still saw deer!!!!

here in Zone 3 I just make sure I am dressed like a "big orange pumpkin" and walk thru my favorite rabbit or squirrel covers ( without dogs, no way my dogs are hunting Nov 15 - Nov 30th ) ...looking like the "old coot" I am who just got cold on stand and is trying to get warm or may be lost...the deer hunters I see never know I am not hunting deer...a friendly wave and moving out of their zone seems to have worked for me all these years...

Just my two cents, I feel you can hunt want you want when you want to.

I hunted coons one time and during gun deer season and I will never do that again. I got harrassed but a guy for standing next to my truck on a back road. Then he called the cops on me and the cop told me I should not be coon hunting during deer season. I later Found out the cop hunted the section next to the section I had permisson to hunt in and he did not want me to disturb his deer. No tickets just a public servent giving his own 2 cents to me.

Rifle season is the best time to duck hunt because there is no pressure, also i have seen lots of guys come back from deer hunting empty handed and one guy have a limit of squirrels, who is going to eat good that night? The one thing that would make things better would be if all bow hunters would let their presence known. I figure if its legal to hunt small game then why not hunt.

as long as guys respect each other and quietly move away, there should not be a problem. In 35 years I've never had one.

If I get lucky early during gun season I go duck hunting and stay out of the woods so I don't mess up anybody's deer hunting

I wouldn't do it, no way JOSE. There are like 469432798167983213240954092 people in the woods with guns, and about 3 of them hunt any other days of the year. I wouldn't...
