I was just outside getting my stuff in order. My son asked what that smell was...I said, "Death".
Will probably go out scouting tonight. Should be a great evening to see some action. Will take camera, hopefully get pictures.

Hello all, pretty excited for the season to be upon us. Judging by my trail cams, I'm hopeful to connect on one of the boys quickly in bow season.

Team names...........gotta come up with some of those.

Late getting in but wanted to say hey!

I hoping for a good season but I'm going into it a little less geeked than past years. I got a bear tag this year and have been putting a lot into that so far. Haven't really thought much about deer. You have to keep your focus when you only get a tag once every five years.

Also, I had 95 acres up in Roscommon that I sold a couple of weeks ago. Thats putting a little damper on this deer season. I hated letting it go. Oh well, no since dwelling on it.

I have no ideal where I will be hunting this year. Might hunt around St. Helen on the state land in the area that the property was located. Might take some time and head for Drummond Island. I don't know, I'm just not sure. I'll get her turned up for deer once I get her out of bear gear.

I'm not sure of a name, maybe we can get away from the traditional names that center around killing deer and do something that honors our boys over seas in the military. Not sure on anything at this time, just throwing out a ideal. Really though it doesn't matter to me.

I look forward to hearing about your guys scouting results and hunting resultd. Good luck.

Guys ....I'm fine with any name but I do like the idea of being a little more original.......;)

Yesterday I took advantage of the rain and scouted one of my hunting spots......found a nice ground scrape with licking branch in the middle of the woods.......decent size rub(4" dia. )adjacent to it.....I placed my trail cam/and backed the hell out......Hopefully we'll get a pic of a mature bruiser..;)

I am hip to any name, but I really like the idea of honoring the men and women of the aremd services...

maybe something like, "honored to serve", or "Thanks for your service", or "screaming Eagles" honoring the 10st airborne

I took a 1.5 yo 8 (wounded) and 3 does.
We've been passing on smaller bucks for a few years now so I have high hopes.

My partner took this one out there 2 years ago.

Nice looking bucks. I think our teams gonna dominate the contest!:evilsmile I won't even preach on QDM as I think it's great and it's done wonders to our camp's hunting, although last year sightings of monsters were down......but also saw the largest buck of my life. I hope to meet him, I know no one else got him as he would have been front page material. But in doing some glassing, there are some wall mounters out in the field. And that picture of the 7 pointer in my pics from the trail cam is a trail leading into those same ag fields. But that place is big buck only. The drag is going to be absolutely terrible. Nasty place, my stand is the only shooting spot available.

I'm a little disappointed in the time I've spent hanging stands. I scouted in late season last year, chose my spots to hang stands, and I've got one done. I have 3 more to go. I may leave work early today..........

Good luck with the Bears David!

DFA...post some pics when ya get em brother.

I hope to have the opprotunity. I have a few bear pics in my photo gallery if you want to check them out. I was a little bumbed to hear that a 500lber was hit and killed by a car a week and a half back; it was hit right near my property. I had been seeing a bear that would go very near 400 and I think it was that bear; they were just exaggerating on the 500 pounds. I havn't seen that bear since I heard about the accident. I guess there is a good chance it was the boar I was targeting.

I'm heading up for bear on the 17th and will return on the 23rd. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Since I sold my property on Labor Day, I really have no ideal where I'm hunting (true). If any of you QDM team mates want to open up some turf, I'll be sure to come and do my part for the team. Just joking; I know how protective we hunters are of our special areas. To be honest, this is a real wierd feeling for me this year. Even though I had planned to hunt the state land around my old place; if it sold, it all seems so different now. Kind of like returning to a different place. I don't have the vocabulary to explain it; it's just weird.

I had 3 1/2 hours to work with yesterday. I went out got one area prepped, set up, limbed, climbning stick up, tree stand up, bow hanger, gear hanger, no shooting lane maintenance needed, and a cam set up. It's a rub line that follows an inner trail along a gas line leading to a corn field 300 yards away.

Then secondly, I took the ATV for a few mile ride with another climbing stick to an area that deer filter out of bedding area, cross a river into 1000 acres of ag land. Cam set up, climbing stick set up for 25 yard shot, still have to put stand up. I hunted a hundred yards away once last year and watched around 20 deer go across the river.

Killing spots are ready to go, 3 cams in the woods for patterning purposes, and all 3 locations are funnels and pinchpoints running into ag fields.

There shall be blood the week of October 1st. Bow camp here I come!:evilsmile

I didn't do as well as I had hoped. I missed a 4 point and got a doe on Thanksgiving. The corn was still up most of the season where I do my southern hunting. After missing, I had gun examined cause coudln't figure out why I couldn't hit paper at 110 yards. Scope had a very small bend in it. New scope on .30-.30 and the TC Omega is ready to go.
They planted soy beans this year, so that means lots of back strap boogie.

Gilbey
09-11-2008, 12:10 PM
Hunted very hard.... Ya know, the usual. Shot a doe bow season. I passed on I really dont know how many bucks. I had one really nice one coming at me but ran out of light, he was a big 10. I had one in rifle season that I could have pounded......that was a big let down. Was hunting down in a swamp off a ridge and boom doe tears by buck right behind her. Back and forth for over 10 minutes in the nastiest windfall swamp you could find. She runs and lays down ready for breeding in my best shooting lane. I go to line up and lean forward on my right knee behind a stump and CRACK. Twig breaks under my knee. Look out of the corner of my eye and there he is looking straight at me. Gun was pointed 90 degrees wrong direction. Moved and he was gone. Really nice 3 1/2 yr old+. I guessed 4 -5 1/2. But it was definately a heart break.

First day of muzzle, went out, it had just snowed 6", went for a walk and stalk, found some nice big prints on the return trip, and went around a knoll to cut them off, there was the deer, 107 yards out in the young pople stand, i saw main beam and 2 G2's decent length, pounded him. Got up there and it was a browless 6. To be frank, I was a little disappointed, but the hunt is what was unforgettable. No bait, no food source, he was just wandering just like myself. And shot him through a 4" window in betweeen the poples. Dropped him on the spot. Drag was 1/2 mile through all that snow. Not fun. But a great hunt.

Gilbey

I had never hunted beans until a farmers field last year that needed some thinning, talk about action. The snow had fallen and they were right next to standing corn. The corn was of ZERO interest and they were just pounding the beans. It was a real eye opener. I may attempt a food plot for muzzleloader season next year with this in mind.

He's a beauty David. Love those Mahogany colored racks.

I may get an AM hunt on the 18th for a doe but work may get in the way.

Sat the 20 for sure.

The oddly low humidity and cool temps down here are making it hard to wait.

That's a real nice one David!

Is it me or does it look like he lost an eye in battle?

Going to complete my last stand this afternoon. Not sure if it's worth checking the cams I just put up..... but it will probably be eating away at me.......and I'm sure that I'll just have to see.............

You see it correct. He even had a hole in the skull behind that wound. Really breaks my heart that I sold that property; maybe this year I'd of seen the boy that messed up his eye. The taxidermist did a real good job fixing him up, you cannot even tell he had been scar'd.

My brother called me today and wants me to do Drummond fron Nov. 1st thru 10th. If I can clear it with the boss and the wife, I think I will go. I also have a guy in Indiana who is trying to hook me up with a farmer that has 8000 acres; I'd like to lease about 400 if I can. We'll see.
