I don't care about our name.....I like the origional if we keep it.
I will be doing some "guiding" the first week of October....and typically don't hunt a lot until the last week of October. Then.....it's hard core through Jan 1st.
I'll be working some migration routs during the late season.....we'll see what happens. Looking forward to hearing how everyone is doing.

We have a few that I know made it through last year on our place.. Only thing is I have my brother (Srconnell22) and Casscityalum on my team as well so they have as good a chance as any at these bucks! We let alot of 2 year olds go last so should be interesting!
We hold a 3 year old or 120" rule on our property so this means I may go empty handed here in MI  BUT.... In the three years previous to this I have yet to not get an opportunity! :D
Saw 13 different bucks that fit the bill last year and only know of 3-4 that were taken so we should have some big deer around including 1 that was about 155 class 10 last year!! What I would not do to have a crack at him this year.. He was only a 4 year old from what I could tell last year so I cannot wait to see what he is this year!
ant1901
09-08-2008, 02:43 PM
I also hunt in Luther we have 80 acres. Not to far from Evart. A buddy of my dads that goes with us has a brother who hunts with his Inlaws in Evart Nice place.
I will be close to you. I hunt and live in Imlay City. I will also hunt in Evart, Ypsi, and Brighton.

I will be doing most of my hunting in the Flushing area. I also hunt 2 or 3 weekends on 200 areas of private in West Branch. Then I do my gun hunting on Seney refuge near the town of Seney in the UP, got a nice 8 point about 1 1/2 miles of the road last year, saw a much bigger one though. Beautiful country up there.

Yes...some nice deer in the Seney area. I haven't hunted that area in over 25 years though. Wow....time sure flies.
I hunt the Upper Peninsula. (Bow mostly....occasionally a muzzle loader.) Marquette county....Delta county......Houghton County.......Dickenson County. There is some magnificant territory up here. My goal is to take a doe during firearm season using my recurve bow......and try for another wall hanger during our pre-rut, rut or migration with my compound. (Nice plan...we'll see how it works out.)
Good luck everyone. I wish you close shots, short blood trails, and huge gut piles!!
By the way....do we keep our team name as is??? Or, do we go with something new?

Well fellas it looks like its gonna be fun. Caribouhunter I used to go through Imlay city to get out to BC then my buddy showed the Capac exit and its a straight shot.
Well BC looks good, should be good for a doe or two, buck wise the locals are pretty tight lipped. We were up there over Labor day ran into one of the farmers that live down the road. I ask him about any good bucks and he says weeeeelllllll there are some bucks and plenty of does. Not that I expect them to give me the skinny on a wall hanger, kinda funny. Behind the house is anyones guess I am sure there is a nce buck in the area. I put down some rye out there and I am trying hard to not go out and look at my growth, but it is coming along nicely and the rain we got today should help.
Team names I am not too picky but am drawing a complete blank when trying to think of any. Here is a couple.
Deer Hunting Mafia (La Cosa Nostra)
Boiler room Brothers
Bubbles in the Blood
Deadly Force Authorized
Alright fellas I gotta get in the rack yawning my **** off.

haha yea im going to get dsc's buck this year:D
Oh to you Thumb huntes..My family farm is right on M-90 just outside of Brown City..ALso doing some hunting hopefully just south of Capac Exit!! If you want to know more about the Brown Town let me know and Ill check in..Im not tight lipped around there cause i got land elsewhere..just shoot me a pm..
I also hunt up near Cass City and Ubly area, as well..
dsconnell
09-09-2008, 01:17 PM
Cass - You might.. But that is OK.. plenty of others to go around!
Oh.. Just hope that you shoot one before Scotty cause once he kills then I am filming you until it is my time to hunt.. Would be terrible if I developed a cold and coughed right when that big one stepped into the shooting lane and blew the opportunity!
..... I probably would not do that honestly!! UNLESS it is my 160 class from last year!

BC and Imlay City seem to be the same. Most of the people are tight lipped. Not me. I have seen 4 different bucks on my property but I wouldn't shoot any of them. Just too small. I do have some land here that I gained permisson to hunt late last season. There was a ton of sign but I didn't see very many deer. I did see one 10 point that was a shooter but didn't present a good shot. Hopefully he's still around. I believe this spot was just a travel route between bedding and the crops. But when I hunted there the crops were already down. Hoping to get there earlier this year before the food source is gone.
Anyone going to fill the doe tag next weekend?
ant1901
09-10-2008, 09:24 PM
I'll be at my spot in Lexington Thursday for a doe If i dont fill a tag I'll try again on the weekend. Took two last year there seen quite a few and took a 6 point late bow.. had a bad limp. I seen about 9 different bucks last year none were shooters except a big 8 i seen right a dusk Nov 8. Came down a trail right towars my stand and turned off about 50 yrds away and i couldnt get him to come back. I tried everything. Hopefully some of them smaller bucks made it to this season and I'll do alright.

I will be out in BC to fill a doe tag or two, gonna take my nephew out on friday and sat and see what we can stir up.
Yea the locals around the 40 are tight lipped but I dont care I know there are bucks, seems every year there is a nice one running around the area.
I think there is an issuse with road hunters and trespassers at this property but there isnt anything I can do about it so just kinda deal with it.
I also share the privilage to hunt with a guy up the road and his boys run the woods when were not there, but we always seem to kill a handful of deer.
I am looking forward to this early doe season out there.

So unless I find a big swamp buck up in the UP during gun season I don't see my self getting a look at a bunch of booners this year. So who is most likely to get lucky this year?? Hmmm.....any way you can edit the arrow out? Maybe show a bowhunter walking over to it instead?
I've done a bit of reading and engauged in many a discussion about outdoor photo's and to many......including me even.... there are just some things I don't care to see in photo's. Tongues hanging out.....arrows and blood all over the place....that kind of stuff.
I'd just suggest taking the arrow out and maybe putting a bow hunter either walking over to the buck.....or maybe a shot of a bowhunter in a tree off to the side.
Just my thoughts on the matter.......I have no idea how easy or hard it is to do this stuff.
As far as representing us at the OS forum....I don't care who does it. I may luck into a bruiser.....but it's not likely. I'd suspect the larger bucks will come from the crop land area of the SLP.

Here is why I asked for the arrow to be edited out. Here is some good photo taking tips which I believe will help you in the field.
Guidlines to help with your photo
(1) Watch your background. Choose a natural background. Keep it simple. Busy, distracting backgrounds can ruin a picture. Simple backgrounds will focus attention on your subject. Watch for objects "growing" out of the subject's head. Never shoot hero pictures in the driveway, back of a truck or on a meat pole or skinning rack.
(2) Keep your camera handy. How many times have you said, "if only I had my camera?' You never know when you or someone you know will take a beautiful trophy buck.
(3) Have the hunter look at the photographer's shoulder. The hunter should look slightly off to one side and not directly into the camera.
(4) Look for good lighting. A cloudy, overcast day makes for better hero shots. Bright sun causes people to squint and creates harsh shadows. If photographing in bright light, place the sun behind you, shining on your subject.
(5) Clean up the animal. No blood or tongues hanging out! Make sure the entire area in the frame is blood free. Make your animal look alive.
(6) Pay attention to the hunter's appearance. Clothing should be clean and blood free. Include the weapon in the photo. Make sure it is in a safe position.
(7) Move in close. Don't include a lot of empty space. This is probably the biggest mistake photographers make---setting up too far away. If you are photographing a hunter and his deer, include just that---the two of them. "Tighter" images make powerful pictures!
Shoot both horizontal and vertical formats. Most people tend to only shoot horizontals. Often
(9) Use a flash. A flash will soften harsh light, fill in shadows and brighten color, especially in bright sunlight. Shoot it both with and without the flash.
(10) Choose the right film or digital settings. Paul prefers 100 ISO rated film and the lowest ISO setting on a digital camera. Lower ISOs work for most situations and yield sharper images and rich color.
(11). When taking photos of your animal, demonstrate full respect for it and refrain from 'sitting on' or 'mounting' your trophy.
In my opinion....it's all about respect for our sport and the animal. Our image is important to protect.

You spying on my property? LOL!!
Not to be harsh or inconsiderate but I kind of like the arrow sticking out of the deer.. It is real and fits the slogan.. It would be cool if we could incorporate a man in a stand in there but I know nothing about that stuff!
I too thought the arrow fit the name that's why I picked it. I wish there were an easy way to add the hunter but there is not. We would have to pick a totally different picture.

The photo isn't a deal breaker for me. I won't be able to use it in my signature area (because of my pro-staff position) but If you all don't mind....then it's ok. But, my sponsor is very particular about having a good image and that includes stuff like this.

I don't have a big problem with the picture either, but I would not mind seeing a different picture than that one. But, then again, I am not the one creating it, so I don't know what all goes into it.

dsconnell looks like everyone has voted for you to be the rep. for Direct Hit. Congrats(I think). Now go out there and bust a booner and do us proud.:D
Don't forget to check in with Steve and let him know of your recently received honor.;) But seriously it sounds like you have the best shot at a big buck.
Good luck to everyone hunting during this early hunt. I guess it's never too early to post our doe and get the pressure off.
