I'm still working on how to do various techniques properly but here is an attempt at a semi realistic stonefly. Let me know what you think.

Just when I think I have this fly tying thing figured out....

I realize just how much I don't know!

Nice job Mr. Hise!

Now comes the real decision........to fish it or not to fish it.

Nice work.

Not to fish it. It took roughly 2 days to complete it, of course, with drying time. Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm fairly new to this realistic tying so I can use all the input I can get.

Very, very nice!!!!

DO you have a nice way to display, some sort of shadow box or something? It's really too nice to stick away in a fly box.

Thanks. I'm actually looking for some type of pexi-glass case. Honestly, I dont think it's very good, so I'll keep trying until I get it the way I want it. I guess it takes practice.:tdo12:

Good Day,

Dave, I don't remember if I showed you this when you were still in GR:

I housed it in a plastic box like you are refering to. I mixed up some epoxy, spread it around the base and added gravel and twigs for a nice realistic setting, like taxidermists do. For me the box was easy enough to find. I got mine at Hobby Lobby near the model cars. Although I have not seen the boxes in a while. But, a hobby shop that deals with models (model cars, airplanes, etc.) should have them or can get them. They come in different sizes and shapes too. Most are designed to protect scale model cars.

To the fly... Getting better indeed old buddy. I like what I see with regard to the tails, abdomen, gills, wing cases and antenae. I also like that you made the effort to split the claws. I am suprised how few people do this when tying realistics. Like fine wine, improving with age... haha!

Good Day,

Almost forgot, what did you use for your antenae?

Steelie

80lb. mono sanded in the center. Both the tails and antennae. Put a loop at both ends of the mono. Twist the mono as you sand it; otherwise, it will turn out flat. Makes two symmetrical antennae or tails.

Thanks. I wish I had more time to play with the realistics but to busy with the fly shop, guiding, custom flies, and family. I'll never get any practice at this rate.
