I have a 1985 50 hp. Merc.
I changed the lower gear lube last night. I do not have a manual with the motor. The guy at the store told me it would probably require 3 tubes ( approx 30 oz.) I drained it and filled it till it began flowing through the vent hole. This only required about 9 oz ?????
Does anyone out there have a similar year Merc? How much does it take?
Thanks

Downrod, I don't know for sure but my 1995 225 HP uses about a quart and my 1993 30 HP uses approx. 1/2 a quart. 30 oz. definitely sounds high.

It began flowing out the vent hole at 9 oz. This seems like too little fluid to me but I don't know
Sounds about right to me, those aren't big lower ends on the 50's.

Frank, this is probably a stupid question but are you filling it from the bottom hole and letting the air escape out of the upper vent hole?

Paul, You are right, the lower unit is small
John, yea I'm filling from the lower hole. I am using a little hand pump and I was wondering if the force of the pump is forcing the fluid to shoot up through the vent hole or if the fluid level is really up to the vent hole. It sounds like it must be fine. I should probably order a manual for the motor.

Downrod, I don't have the same motor as you but I cannot
see what the difference would be in how much fluid that it
would hold. My Evinrude 40 takes about 3/4 of a quart though
it could be less since I have trouble with not getting it all over
everything. MY .02 worth.
