I wonder, I see it all the time people running with their anchor lights on...Do you run your boat with your anchor light on, and why? Just curious...nothing intended...

Not being a smart #*# or anything, but what do you mean by my "anchor" light? I am a new boat owner, and didn't see anything about that in any book yet.
Or am I overlooking the obvious? White light in the rear?

YES ! I do because it's REQUIRED !
Here's a link to the boating handbook.
Michigan boating handbook (http://boat-ed.com/mi/handbook/)
They call it an "anchor light" because it is required when on the water between sunset and sunrise while not under power. (anchored) But it is also required when underway.
Hope this helps.
To see a description of the requirements, click on "It's the Law" then on the sub-heading of Navigation lights.
At night, the anchor light and bow lights help others determine the position and direction of other boats. On the way back to port, overly bright stern lights (or flood lights pointing toward the back of the boat) can really make it difficult to see what the other boater is doing. No light at all would make it impossible to see other boats if they are ahead of you and traveling in the same direction.

Like JPollman said it is the law.
When underway the boat must have a White Stern Light visible from a 360 degree direction. The light must not be obstructed by Camper Tops, Passengers or the like.

Well great...That's what I like to see...people knowing the rules and just not buying a boat and going out there before they know what to do...Yes, (rule 23C) inland rules for a vsl under 12 meters is requireded to display a stern light (135 degrees) and sidelights, and an all around white light...Thanks guys I feel safer out there now!:)
Once again just checking...didn't mean to offend anyone...none taken...
