I just got back from up north after my elk hunt and family camping trip. I was fortunate to shoot a nice 5x6 bull on Tuesday morning at 0815. I will post pictures and the story in the am. Jimmy Gretzinger from Michigan Out Doors Television filmed the hunt for the show.

I have pictures in my album. The one where I'm holding him is not the best shot, but it shows the elk.

I'll post more later.

Congrats! And a Shiawassee County guy at that! I'm jealous! Hopefully the state will feel the need to grant me an elk tag one day, though I know there are hundreds, if nto thousands more, deserving beforeme.

Any other details on the hunt? Congrats again!

I hunted with Keith Huff and his family from Johannesburg. I started out early in ther morning with four bulls busting out of a wood lot when I was about 15 yards short of getting a 40 yard shot on a really nice 6x6 that was with them. Another hunter with Keith shot the 6x6 as he ran across an open field.

We then went to another private farm and set up on a two track to wait for a bull that had been seen by another of Keith's hunter who shot a cow. The bull came out the woods and stood on a rise looking at us from about twenty five yards, but I didnt have a clear shot. After going back into the woods the bull followed three cows across the two track where I shot him. He went across a clear cut and into the woodlot next to it where we found him. I could not believe how these animal can take a shot that would flip a whitetail right over and keep on running.

I used a Savage 111 in 30-06 with Federal ammo loaded with 180 gr. Nosler Accubonds.

Keith and his family are great guys who really know what they are doing.
