I threw my boat in the river there for the hell of it, and took a ride out to the Detroit river. I watched a guy downstream catch a white bass. He said he catches everything out of there, walleye, bass, occasional pike/musky. I've also heard of occasional steelhead as well. Its the rouge, kinda hard to believe but true.

Its true, there are fish in the rouge. My neighbor pulled alot of eyes out of there a couple springs ago. He released all of them, but they are in there. If its just for sport than it cant hurt to give it a shot.

I have fished behind the Melvindale Ice Arena from shore and have caught fish every time. Last year I caught a large carp that pulled my pole into the water. I have heard of walleye and steelhead caught in the Rouge as well. By the way this is my first post, so hello to all ,good luck hunting and fishing and be safe!:fish:

Thanks for the info, beaujam. Great 1st post, welcome to the forum! :fish:

Be great to find a good carp swim that's an easy drive. I suppose a lot of other fish make it up into the Rouge there from the DR.

There's a great carp fisher's group here in SE Michigan: check out posts by "Carpman" or go to michigancarp.com. Had a blast carping European style at the most recent carp fish-in.

Welcome beaujam, I will try to fish there before the weekend, and I will post the results later. Do you live close to the Rouge?

I ride my bike along the Rouge when I can. I usually start behind the Melvindale arena and ride to the Hyatt and back. I see fish jumping in that river every time.

My son and his friends went fishing there earlier this summer. Caught nothing but white bass.

If you want to get together tomorrow and give it a try, I'm game. I've never fished the Rouge but I'm willing to give it a try. Send me a PM or post here and I'll let you know.

Chris

Took my buddy for a ride on my 14 foot boat down from Rouge at Melvindale out to the Detroit river. Some guy at the boat launch was fishing from shore, said he was catching a bunch of small perch and a sheephead. Down toward the detroit river saw 3 other groups of people fishing, not sure what they caught. Saw a lot of fish jumping, and a few cranes flying along the river. Those cranes look like small Pteradactyls! Kinda of a cool urban jaunt.

I have been searching on google with no luck about fishing the rouge so I registered on this site tonight. There are fish in the dearborn melvindale area of the rouge. Last summer my brother in law took me to a spot in melvindale off of dix which I believe is behind a water treatment plant. It looked at first like a spot that would not be good but with his first cast he had a decent catfish that stunned me. Now this was not my first time fishing and I have landed some nice bass and catfish out of newburgh, kent lake and the detroit river. Last summer from may to september I landed at least 20 to 30 large mouth using tubes, 3 or 4 catfish, 2 sheep head, maybe 5 silver bass, 2 carp and countless rock bass, blue gills, and perch with hooks above weights. I started fishing it again last month and foul hooked 4 gizzard shad that ranged between 8 to 12" that i sent pictures to dnr because i had never seen them and i got a response saying they didn't get that big. On may 3rd 2009 I landed a rainbow trout that was from the ground to my thigh and I'm 5'10". I did take pictures but as all fish stories go I did not have a tape measure in my box thanks to my daughter measuring the pet turtles. But none the less a rainbow in the rouge I couldn't believe it. I have been going to Andy's bait and tackle in melvindale for two years and he said he has had people show him pictures of rainbows from the same area but not in a few years. I will say the area is not pretty. I have found bum huts, crack pipes, needles, condoms, tampons and god knows what else. But I have also seen heron, geese, ducks, swan, and snapping turtles. it has the widest variety of fish and wild life I have seen and for fishing I prefer it over detroit river, huron river, newburgh lake, wilcox lake, and kent lake but like I said it is not pretty so be prepared to catch a wide variety of fish but deal with alot of negative urban problems .

Wow, stevansanchez, thanks for the report! :fish:

It has been a goal of mine to catch a MA game fish in the Rouge. Where there are big gizzard shad there will be muskies, pike, and monster bass and walleyes, especially in the fall. Gotta remember this...

Good report on the fishing. Thats very cool. The Rouge has come a long way. I actually voted for a "tax increase" to fund the sewage retension tanks to seperate sewage from being flushed into the river during heavy storms. Good to see life is coming back to the river.

Old timers been telling me that Detroit River is cleaner now than what is was 30-40 years ago. They said it was because it was the big industrial age and factories were booming with work. All kinds of pollutants were being pumped into the water and everybody was doing it.

I finally got some pictures on here of some of the fish from the rouge. I'm sure I will be able to post plenty more so check them out.

I can't believe people are allowed to talk so freely about steelhead in the Rouge. Isn't that one of the protected rivers that you can't name specifically?

My parents live near Dearborn Country Club. I'm sure I'll start seeing tons of cars parked on Ford Rd near Evergreen wading in the Rouge for the 4th best steelhead fishery in the SLP.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

I'm sorry but I don't think it's a joke that the efforts over the last 20+ years to clean up the rouge are finally starting to pay off.

OK, found them, thanks!

That rainbow did look a bit ill, but seeing a rainbow having been caught in the Rouge is cool in and of itself. :fish:
