This may be a dumb question, but I want to make sure I have it right. I am looking for a boat right now, about 16 ft for fishing and I was born in 1980.

Ok, so I was under the assumption that I have to take the boaters safety course and get the certificate to operate the boat on Michigan waters but today my friend said that I don't have to go do that because I have a drivers license. What do I need? I looked at a couple websites like boat-ed and the way it was worded, I wasn't sure, so I came here. Thanks in advance!

You do not need Boaters Safety for a boat. But if you get a PWC ( personal water craft) you will need to take boaters safety.

I recommend you take the course anyways. A lot of good info in that course.

Cool thanks for the quick response! I am still studying the online stuff and reading a bunch, I was just wondering about taking the official test or just knowing.

I've dropped a lot of time and money getting the highest pilots license you can get, I know the studying helps you get to know a lot! I'm taking boating just as serious as far as studying goes. Like flying, boating is it's own art form in my eyes.

:coolgleam Do yourself and the people you take on your vessel a favor, TAKE THE SAFE BOATING COURSE! It's painless, you learn "the rules of the road" and there's plenty of people out on the water who don't have a clue what to do. At least YOU will. :fish:
