The only thing I know about "meat rigs" for Great Lakes salmon is I hear people mention it sometimes...I have never used or even seen one. What are they? How are they used, presented and such. What kind of bait is typically used for the "meat."

A meat rig is a rig you put a full herring in or a piece of cut herring in.

You put the herring in the head and most of the time you run it behind a flasher!! You can run it anywheres in your spread, downriggers, dipseys ,leadcore or copper. It can be a deadly presentation but it has its day just like anything else!! Hope this helps!!

To the best of my knowledge, Herring is only sold whole now. They do sell a jig to help you cut the Herring to the correct size strips. This may be useful for for a beginner. I have also seen whole Herring run with the same 3 teaser rotating head rig.

Alot of you tackle stores around the west side of the state sell it. As for cut herring i'm talking about strips!! You can only buy full herring now and then you cut it and brine it your self. Heres a good source you can learn how to brine it and cut it!!http://www.michigansportsman.com/Tips_n_Trix/Cut_Bait.htm I've always done better on cut (strips) herring then full!
