Took a boat ride today with the wife. Launched from crocker and headed to the firecracker. Went up the south channel then the north and down the middle channel. Went out the the channel probably between bouy4 and bouy six, I saw what I first thought was fish splashing on the surface. Slowly went to the spot only to discover that there was only 6" of water if that. A 10x10ft area was only 6" deep with mostly 2ft around that surrounded by 5-6FOW for the rest of the area. Never saw that spot before. All the splashing was just the wave action hitting that spot.
Anyone else see that spot while in that area?

Mike, I call it Sand Island but I don't think it really has a name. I've seen a few boats come to an abrupt halt cruising accross the area. Mark it on your GPS because I've come close to beaching on it and I know it's there. The last few years it has been exposed but with just a few inches of water over it, it can fool you.

John, I did mark it on my GPS. Took the coord. and brought them up on the map. It did not show even a hump or rise in depth.
Looks like a good spot to get out and take a swim on a hot summer day.

Been there, nearly beached. I now have it marked on the GPS. Saw it just in time.

Been there .... Saw that
It wasn't this past Spring but LAST spring that I went out to that area with Esox and Byron on Esox's boat. We went right by that area and it was all water. Later on that Spring (actually, it was probably early Summer) my father and I came through the area thta there it was. God I hope we get some water back SOON !

Keep your eyes open in that area, because there is another one forming West of Sand Island, toward the mouth of the Black Creek. Have stopped for a swim on Sand Island, nice break on a hot day.
Noticed the new sand bar about two weeks ago, while fishing by the mouth of the middle channel. Mike, saw the same thing you did, looked like a school of fish surfacing, a look through the glasses proved it was something new, Sand Island was visible, because the gulls were resting there, this new one is about a quarter mile East. Very shallow water, use caution.
Even in my little boat, I am very leery of running out of the bouy line anymore, unless I am positive of where I am. Seems to me the downstream end of the Middle Channel is a lot more dangerous than at any time I can remember in the past. At least the bottom there isn't rocky,Good news for all the boats I see kissing it.
All: this is a pretty big sand bar. Probably a good 200 yards in lenght and about ten feet across in spots. Narrows down at both ends. Last year it was above water and people beached and enjoyed the warm water. This year with the water up the top is just below the surface as has been described. Be carefull. I fish that area quite a bit and I have seen numerous boats nail that bar. No fun and expensive on the prop.

I saw a picture of that Sand Island in a recent issue of National Geographic. The article was about the dropping lake levels. It's a good article if any of you get a chance to read it. That island definitely looks funny and out of place in the middle of the lake.
Tight lines,

If it is not too much trouble, could one of you with the GPS coordinates, provide these? I want to look on my Garmin Lake Map to see if this appears on that software.
Thanks!
