Some of you may have noticed that I have not been posting many pics this summer, I've been having problems with my 4 year old Cudde working only intermittently. When I have gotten pics they have been mostly does & fawns or a couple of 1.5 year old bucks but there has been no sign of anything bigger. It's been a frustrating summer deer cam wise. Last year I consistently got pics of two nice 2.5 year olds, which I have been getting pics of since they were fawns. I was pretty sure that they had survived the last season since none of the neighbors had harvested anything that looked like either of them but so far no pics. I was getting a little worried that yotes or cars might have taken them out. So today I went out to check the cam and finally, much to my relief, one of them has made an appearance. I'm pretty sure that this is one of the same bucks from last year, the crab claws are pretty distinctive. He's grown a little in the G2 department since last year, I can't wait to see himout of velvet! Now if I can just keep the camera working, things should start looking up!

No, it's dirt. They are standing in mineral lick that gets recharged every December. By this time of year they have dug a pit that is about 3" deep by 5 feet in diameter. The area around it is all pine needles. I'm not sure what your seeing that looks like bait.

Here is a picture of the same deer (the one on the right) just a little over a year ago. You can see the left crab claw is shorter and the right one is a little more spread out and has longer tines, same as the deer pictured above.

Falk, with the flash you can see how they have dug the up dirt in the mineral lick a little better and the surrounding pine needles. No bait in this pic, either. ;)

What cam are you having trouble with and what would you recommend for a camera if you were to go get one today?

It's one of the older Cudde's, it's either 4 or 5 years old, can't remember which and has been essentially been out in the woods year round the entire time that I've owned it. I've gotten probably 20,000+ pictures with it, so I'm not complaining, I got my moneys worth out of it. Just too cheap to buy another until this one completely gives up the ghost. If I was going to buy another commercially manufactured cam I would buy another Cuddeback but not the IR version. I'm leaning towards a home brew for my next cam or buying a custom made cam, there is a guy who builds cams using a Sony platform, who lives fairly close to where I live, so I might give him a try.

Oh yeah, if you get a Cudde make sure you buy it from Bernie, he has great customer service!

Big difference between a 2.5 year old and a 3.5 year old, amazing what another year of growth adds. That smaller buck should be pretty decent next year. Looks like the food plots are paying off. ;)
