The only sturgeon I had on tonight hit at a little before I was planning to leave at 1:30. I knew I had a good fish but did not put any pressure on him until I cleared my other line. When I tightened up on him a bit he promplty peeled 275 yards of 50 lb test off my reel without even thinking about slowing down or turning. When he got to the end my 40 lb leader snapped like a piece of thread. I have landed fish in excess of 65 inches and over 80 lbs. Those fish do not even come close to this one.:yikes:

Going tonite. You been fishing the same area? Give me a call.

That is a bummer man about getting spooled.
Penn 209
Did you have braided on the 209?

Braided main line with a monofilament leader. Fished on a 9 ft medium heavy bass pro cat max rod. Owner cutting point saltwater hook. I tightened down the drag as much as I dared and it did not even slow him down.

When I first started sturgeon fishing, I took 3 large boat bumpers and tied them together. Then I hooked a Carabiner to them. If I ever thought I was getting close to getting spooled, I was going to hook it to my anchor and leave the anchor. Then come back for it after we landed the fish.
Since then, 4 years ago, I have never needed it (landing a few 50" and one 60+" fish), so I stopped carrying it around. I guess I had better get it out just in case.
I read on another message board that someone is claiming to have gotten a 82" fish in the Port Huron area. Michigan dnr PDf does not even go to 82". http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/StClair_weight_estimation_174130_7.pdf

that's one fish i have never fished for. but to spool a penn 209 with 50# and 275yards is a biggggg fishy. not sure to say congrets or say holy chit.
You have to be like those guys on the movie "JAWS" where they end up sticking barrels in the fish to make em' surface!! HOLY CRAP that was one monster of a fish!!

Geeezzzz!
I've had snags in the DR that anchored the boat, and I could hardly break off using 25# big game on a Penn 209. That must have really been a monster!
