hey i was wondering if a rage broadhead would be a bad thing to use on a elk...i have been shooting and the rage seems to be the only thing that will fly straight...i have only tried muzzys and thunderheads besides that...and i just got my bow tuned recently...if theres any other broadheads that you have used on elk let me know how they worked, i would like to try them out! thanks!

I don't want to start a debate but that seems to be your problem. From my experience those 2 heads don't fly the best. They are great as far as durability and performance. Maybe look at the slicktrick broadheads.(if your worried about using mechanicals) Rage is about the only mech I would consider.

Depending on your set up, I wouldn't hesitate to use the 2 blade Rage on elk. Penetration with these is not a problem. Try out some NAP Nitrons as well...small cutting diameter but they fly great, even at high speeds. One thing to think about....any problems you night have torquing the bow or dropping an arm etc, is magnified when using fixed blade broadheads. If the bow is in fact tuned and speeds aren't outrageous, there's other issues at work. Some contact maybe? Incorrectly spined arrows will sometimes fly great with field points but can't recover fast enough after the shot to stop a fixed blade that wants to steer the arrow etc.

The guides in NM where I shot my bull last fall, said that the Rage heads were really good, only one as far as an expandable thay they would ok. I shot the 1 1/8" stricker G5. They fly great, just like a field tip. Penetrated both sides at 48 yds with 60# pull on my drenalin.

Well Johnny it looks like the Rages might end up being ok despite what I was thinking last night. I would however get those blades scary sharp. We'll have to spend a little time and make sure we get them good and sharp. I just ordered some Thunderhead XP100's so hopefully I will get them in a week or so and get them all touched up and sharp. CYA in a few.

old school - Congrats on an awesome bull.

Yes there are 6 of us going total to the Bob Marshall in Montana. My Uncle was that only one that drew a bull tag but the rest of us have cow tags and are just looking forward to our first out west adventure. I've never made it past Nebraska so seeing the mountains will be a real treat. We will have tons of photos to post when we get back.

I posted my pics of tests I did on the rage broadhead. I shoot muzzys and they fly good for me. I would buy a sharpener and sharpen whatever head you use. Even out of the pack. I bought the G5 sharpener and now sharpen my heads right out of the pack. It gets um "scary" sharp.

I shot my bull with a NAP crossfire and it worked great but I have since switched to the G5 montec. It is just more durable and flies great. A friend of mine that is going to Montana (Missouri breaks area)with us on our hunt this year is going to try the rage broadhead. I checked it out and I dont think it will give you guys any problems if my G5's werent flying so good I think I would try out the rage also. Good luck and have fun. Be prepared to work hard, harder than everyone else and you'll be successful.

Kinetic Energy is the main thing here when it comes to penetration. If you guys are shooting the typical eastern Whitetail speed set up, I would stay away from a mechanical head. Slick tricks, Montec's, or Wac'em broadheads would be my choice. They fly great and have the durability to punch through the hide and ribs of an elk. Hopefully your arrow weight is at least 420 grains, as that is pretty much the bottom line for a good elk set up. You want to have at least 60 ft/lbs of kinetic energy. My current set up is 72 ft/lbs, with a 423 grain arrow. I am shooting Slick Tricks. Also be sure you can shoot at longer ranges. 30-50 yards is a pretty common shot here.

As a side note, you guys picked a good year to come out here. The elk and deer have had a great summer. Water was plentiful so the herds are very healthy and the Antler growth was very good. Good luck in the Bob. I'll be about 50 miles south of you guys on the Continental Divide. :)

Getting away from mechanicals was the best thing Ive ever done. Montecs fly just like feild tips too. I used to use thunderheads then muzzys. Then switched to mechanicals for a while, then to g5s. I have never looked at another broadhead since.

Chuck Adams switched to Rage broadhead 2 years ago and he is one of the best no nonsense bowhunters in America today!
I love the Rage and will be using the 2 blade for my UP bear hunt 15 Sept.
Great accuracy, awesome penetration, and a huge wound area for easy blood trail tracking.A well placed shot with a Rage broad head is a quick clean kill on any North American game animal!
