If you were buying a new transom mount electric trolling motor for a 16 foot fish and ski (open bow w/windshield); how many pounds of thrust would you purchase and why?

A Minn Kota 55 lb should be adequate. I think that is pretty much the max thrust you can get without going to a 24 volt system. I use a 55 on my 15' river boat and it works just fine.

I have the minnkota 55lb AP on my 17.5' skeeter and it does the job quite well.

I have a 70LB 24V Minn Kota (on a 16'1" hull) and it's GREAT for holding in the wind or current.
:fish2:
The problem with 12V motors is this:
The voltage is the "00mpH" that turns your prop and even IF you have two or three batteries in parallel supplying gobs of current (amps) , once your voltage drops - the prop can't rotate as fast as it did with a full charge and that lower voltage power just turns to heat in the motor windings.
I'm not saying that the 55LB motors are not good , but if you intend to troll a LOT or battle with adverse conditions - don't try to get out with the minimum.
Like guys have stated here before : buying underpowered gas engines for a boat is bad , and so is a trolling motor that's not up to the task.
:)

If I had some money to spend - I'd put a 80LB Terrova US2/Co-Pilot onboard.

Would you guys go lower for a motor primarily being used on the Bay as opposed to the river?

I would go with as much trust as you can get for the boat. (with battery storage not being a problem). This is just my opinion, but you can never go wrong with more power!!! FYI I have a Lund 1800 Fisherman with 80lbs and wish I had more.

Previous boat: 16' Crestliner, MinnKota 55 AP bow mount that was just adequate. More is better. AutoPilot is very nice.

Joe ,
If you are primarily going to bass fish & just bump along - no biggie , but if you are going to DRAG THE WATERS......
When you pull baits for MILES with an electric the true difference becomes readily apparent.
Hell no - get as much as you can .

I have a 42 LB Minn Kota Auto Pilot that has worked adequately for me. And it is attached to a 18' Yar Craft. And for those of you that are familiar with the boat brand, you must agree that these are very heavy and sturdy boats.
Most of the time I used this set up was in the Det. River, Jigging.
For actually dragging baits around I can see where you may want something bigger.

By the way the motor I am referring to is for sale at this time. I don't care for the Jigging thing much anymore. I like to drift or troll with the 90 horse with the beaver tail down. Must be getting lazy in my old age!!!

I have a 19.5 foot Champion Fishhunter, and I recently put a 80 lb-24V Terrova with Co-Pilot on it. That thing is sweet for trolling spinners for walleyes. I trolled for 6-7 hours straight at 1.2-1.4 and it was still going strong. You can control the speed and direction from your wrist. I take my kids out fishing and before I had this, I would have to run the kicker. It was a bear trying to run the kicker, set the lines, net fish, etc. Now I just set it at a speed and let it go.

Last week I used it at Wheatley. I use the kicker for speed and the bow mount to steer and to keep the boat straight. I lock the kicker at one speed and pointing straight ahead and the just steer with the Terrova. I was also able to adjust the speed up or down in small increments with it as well.

I haven't tried it in the river yet, however, I think it will do just fine.

No going back for me!!

Not sure of the year,Joe, but it is approx 6-8 years old but still like new! Used very little.
It is a bow mount, and I know that when I bought it it was quite expensive. Top of the line at the time, with the longer shaft.
I will entertain any reasonable offer. I guess I will have to find out what a Minn Kota with auto pilot goes for now and set the price accordingly.
I'll post a more accurate price in a few.

Looks like the Terrova with the 54" shaft is as near as I can get to it.
So with that in consideration....$600.00 OBO
Seller wants to sell, so if I get a offer in the ball park...It's gone!

Like I said, this motor has seen little use. Maybe 10 hrs. max! So I found 1 that compares and knocked $100.00 off as a starting price.
OBO can cover a lot of ground!!! And I'll warranty 6 mos.!
Don't want to hijack.

You've got Coastline Power right up the road on Anchor Bay Drive, he is an authorized Minn Kota dealer/repair center.

Man, I gotta get out more! I have lived on Anchorbay Dr. for almost20 years and never heard of him!
Located by Mackies or Deckers I presume?
If not it has to be a private residence. Got a contact number? Maybe he would like a good slightly used motor at a fair price. Or at least he can tell me just what is a fair price for my motor.
Thanks

I was away on vacation all last week and just got back.
