View Full Version : If you could have one lure.....
This is a little different than the normal "if you could have one lure" threads.
If you could have only one lure to catch fish for FOOD, from shore what would it be and why?
I'll give mine a bit later - Bryon

I would probably use a Mepps spinner. I use it in different colors and sizes and present it a couple of different ways and it does the job more often than not. They work well with cast and retrieve.

Bucktail Jig. Casts like a bullet. Versatile as heck, and I cant think of a fish that won't take one.

If you mean catch fish or starve, and it had to be a lure, I'd use a casting bubble and spider. Sizes of fish at that point wouldn't matter, just one's in the bucket, and there's usually an abundant supply of different species willing to hit a spider. And if not in survival mode, same lure but sort the catch for respectable size.

Chunk of crawler on a small orange blade with red beads harness, remember that one Bryon? Mike
Chunk of crawler on a small orange blade with red beads harness, remember that one Bryon? Mike;) Mike, I tried that combo last time I was wall fishing in St.Clair, the walleye said no dice  Of course, they said that for everything Percha and I put out there too.
For me, a #3 Silver Countdown Rapala. I always caught panfish on this little guy and some decent bass but this year I've really put this guy to use. Was my best trout lure and got me many a good crappie this season as well. If I need a meal I'm busting that out - Bryon

I will second the Mepps #3 or #4. I do rather well with these on a lot of smaller inland lakes.

Just because of the luck I've had with it this year, I'm going to have to go with the perch jointed rapala. Mmmm... rapala...

Depends on where I am and what food I'm looking for.
If I were down south it would be a 1/0 circle hook with chicken liver for cats. Not exactly a lure but I'm just making a point.
If I had to go with one, it would be a perch colored (orange/chartreuse peppered) 1.5" tube with a 1/16th oz jig. Panfish can't lay off it. Smallies dig it and it proved very effective on trout in WVA. Can be jigged through the ice and works well in weed beds and Lilly pads.
Not to burst any bubbles but some of you might starve come winter trying to use a Rapal or other hard body through the ice :p .

For food from shore would have to be something I could work in lakes or streams, and would catch pan fish and other small fish that are easy to catch and/or catchable in winter.
I'd go with a small Rebel Deep Crawfish.

Last Sunday it was a black/silver jointed Shad Rap. Caught 3 (landed 2) within the first 10 minutes - casting into about 35' of water. Caught 7 bass off that lure that day. Of course this week, they could be hungry for something else...but I bet I try that lure again. 8# mono with a 6" in-vis-a-leader. Spinning setup. Surface water temp was warm - 80 degrees. Time 6 am. Early morning mist and water like glass. Man that was fun.

Works well for walleye/smallies in any river.. try it!

Another vote for a 1/16oz jig and a 1.5" tube, only I would probably go with hot pink head and white body/tenticles, but for the same reasons: catches bass, trout and every kind of panfish. Fish it either suspended under a float or cast/retrieve, depending on conditions.
Wallies are just to picky, thats the best thing I have ever used for the gills, (other than a glow bug eye )I'll agree those Walleye are too damn picky. Those things have been damn near impossible to catch from shore this year. Granted I haven't been out as much as I'd like but that's kind of hard when your spending 20 bucks in gas and catching rock bass. If you need a fishing partner let me know :D
Interesting votes from people so far. I'm pretty shocked nobody said Beetle Spins - Bryon

From shore, so I am assuming warm weather. I would have to go with a #7 black and silver rapala. Caught consistently more fish on this lure than any other in my box. If it were just any lure period no matter what the conditions were, I would have to go with a round head jig with a 2inch chartruese grub. Esox hit the nose on the head about jigs, just have not done alot of good with bucktails.

I've said it before and I'll say it again beetle spins. cast it,jig it,drag it on the bottom, use with or w/o bait, with or without spinner. It catches fish .

Right on. Can be made in all sizes and colors. Definitely fishable in numerous ways/conditions. To date only a brook trout or bluegill comes to mind that I have not caught on one.

A $2 wallmart special with purple head black top and silver holographic finish.I catch more different species of fish on that lure than almost any other lure that I have. This year its been the only lure that I have been able to catch walleye on.It was my #1 lure last year so much that I bought 3 cases of them :D

Best shore bait man has ever known is the crawler, which is actually kind of funny, because nightcrawlers cant possibly be part of a fishes natural food supply.
It’s obvious you have never heard of the Canadian Crawler migration. :p
