Hello all,

I have been looking over all the good info on the site here and I figured I would join and say hello and see if anyone might be willing to help me try to get into some walleye in the Muskegon area. I have never until now tried targeting these fish and my lack of success is driving me crazy and making me go after them even harder. I have spent hours up on hours on the water these last two weeks on Muskegon Lake & White Lake, primarily after sundown. My main methods have been backtrolling Lindy rigs with Crawlers at .8 MPH or so along dropoffs as well as doing the same with crank baits. We seem to mark fish but who knows what they are as they sure are not taking the bait we are offering. We are planning on hitting Muskegon Lake on Wed. night to try again. Anyone have any input for me that might help put us onto the fish? Am I going about this all wrong with thinking I need to be out there at night right now? Any help you all would be willing to give would be greatly appreciated!

I think you are about a month early for Muskegon Lake walleye. But if you are determined here is what I know about Muskegon Lake eyes.

Don't start fishing until after midnight. Every time I have tried to catch them before midnight I wasted my time.

I like to troll body baits, like a Rapala Shad Rap, along the steep drops. I would say speeds of 1.2 to 1.8 mph. The water is warm they will chase if they are hungry.

You should also try Mona Lake. I have caught walleye out there and I know guys that have with similar tactics. You can troll out there anytime, you don't have to wait for dark.

They are catching walleye on Musk Lake right now. Try trolling between snug harbor boat launch and point marine in the 15' - 20' depth. Try using BB and harnesses, .8 might be a little slow, we usually troll around 1 - 1.4. There are around 20 boat's out there every evening. Fish are being caught.....

Thanks to both of you for the advise. We will be out there tonight to give it another go. It sounds like we have been on the right track but just coming up short. I will up the speed as both of you suggested and see if that helps.

Do Walleye always hang out down low no matter the depth they are in or do they suspend as well? I know there are fish that may break the rules but whats the norm?

Don't be scared to troll a shallow running crank after dark, a HJ or X-Rap both work well after dark...............

We catch them often in 2 to 3 fow after dark.........

Ok, here is my report... Wed night, skunked. Thur night skunked. Tonight skunked!!

I can report guys are hauling fish in but just not myself yet. I am completely new to the walleye and just trying to understand all of the techniques.

I am going to start a new post on the topic of trolling gear that I need some help with but don't want to lose the topic of Muskegon Lake eyes'. If any of you can help on that post please do!

Thanks again guys...
