I'm going to have a fishing tournament for my church men as a bonding outing about the second Saturday of August. I think I'm going to have it somewhere in Coldwater, since we could hook up to one of the chain of lakes and spread out a little bit. My questions are...
1. Which public access would anyone reccomend? I want to be wherever we're the most likely to catch fish.
2. What kind of structure should the tournament part have? Should we do inches of fish, pounds of fish? Average of either of those based on the number of people on the boat? I need some advise here since the number of people per boat will probably vary greatly. We may also have some youngsters among us, so anything that anyone could suggest would be VERY helpful.
Also, any other information or suggestions that anyone might have is more than welcome. I have a couple of weeks to plan this, but I need to get going on it. Thanks in advance guys!

You could do it by age to some extent... 15 and under... etc...

I'd go by pounds, thats the way the bass masters do it. I'd also recommend catch and release on the spot. When someone catches a fish I'd have them measure and weigh the fish and report to you on a cell or walkie talkie. This way there is less stress on the fish, plus im sure you'll have some boats without live wells so this would ensure the bass get back in the lake in good health. If you were wanting a prize for the winner I work at walmart and they and kmart are marking their fishing stuff way down, can probably get good deals on prizes right now.
hope this gives you some ideas
i'll talk to some buddies and try to find a good lake in the coldwater area

I would deffinately do it by weight...to make it the easiest for you, I'd suggest just doing big bass...each team weighs their biggest fish they caught for the day and hand out prizes accordingly...

i guess you'd rather see a bunch of dead fish, seeing it's a church outing im sure most of the people are honest and if someone called in a 20lb bass i'd instantly call it bullshit seeing the world record is 25lb 1ounce

Ummm... o.k. :confused: I'd argue this "fact" all day but it would be pointless.
Issue everyone the same weigh in sheet. Make sure EVERYONE has a measuring device that is NOT a tape measure to lay the fish on. YOU as tournament director assign a weight to each 1/8th inch over 14" and that is listed on the weigh in sheet. Measure each fish, record it's weight. Basically it's a paper tournament based on the "golden rule" scale that many people here are fond of.
For instance:
14" = 1 lb 2 oz
14 1/8th" = 1 lb 2.5 oz
14" 1/4" = 1 lb 3 oz
Etc.......

I have a complete golden rule conversion sheet, converts ounces to decimals based on length, makes things easy, PM me and i will send you a copy! And this time of year, believe it or not the goldenrule board weights are soo close, i weighed a 19"er saturday at 4.01lbs on my scale, golden rule says 4lbs even, just so you know the weights will be real close to actual, also print up some weighin sheets, all will have same page that way and have someone else in the boat initial that the measurement was actuall, should be a fun day!

No, I'd rather people show up to bass tourneys w/ working livewells.
