I'm considering picking up this commercial fridge to modify into a smoker. I got a killer deal on it, but it's just so damn BIG....:tdo12:
It does have the potential to be the mother of all smokers though...

I'll have to haul it back home from Chicago first. Then for a while I plan on giving the whole idea plenty of thought before I go carving her up into her next life. :D
The thing is, it's supposed to be in working condition. If this fridge holds a good temp in the garage this summer I'll be hard pressed on ruining it for the cause of a smoker. If it doesn't, well,, then it's on to a better life. It's inside dimensions are approx. 6'x5'x28" deep. Thats a lot of meat.
I'm considering dividing it into two compartments. One hot side for larger meats and one colder side for fish. it'll take some thought though.
Anyone with an idea feel free to chime in.

I have a great Idea. Bring it back from chicago, and drop it off at my place. I'll give ya 200 bucks for it!:D
If it works, I wouldn't make a smoker out of it. Thats a huge waste of money. If it don't work as a fridge, it would deffinately make a good LARGE smoker.
Nice find!

Thats what I'm sayin.... How about I have it plugged in (if possible) and I do a recon mission to get an operational status. If it's cold I'll make no guarantees but turn it over to you and help you haul it. I'd hate to see this go to waste if its a good fridge. If not it'll be a perty smoker fer my gargage.

I got nothin to haul it with. Need a truck with no cap on it or a flatbed trailer.
Looks like a mighty fine unit!

Well,,,, I'll get it home and see if it runs good & cold. Then we'll see what we see over the summer.

Well, I got the fridge home and nestled comfortably in the garage. After it rested in place for 24 hours I plugged her in and she started purring. 30 minutes later the fridge was up to temp and cycling at 37 degrees. I'm already working on Super Smoker plan B.....:(
Luckily I have a really cool wife that understands her man can't cut into a perfectly good fridge and needs to build a proper wood burner....:D
Looks like this project may take a little longer than anticipated...:)

Beer? Yeah, maybe so too... To be honest I'm getting a little spoiled having this sucker. I can keep my sauces, juices, meats, vegies, anything grillable in there and make more room in the kitchen fridge. Right now it has a dozen ears of corn, a brisket, two butts, a picnic roast (wifes purchase, not sure how i'm doin that one) and several hard to keep (from the kids) juices.
Eventually I'll have my smokers and Chargriller/smoker in the garage along one wall on a central duct running out of a small 6x6" fan opening. That'll be hapnin...:)
Then I won't have to worry about wind, frozen weather or heat as the garage will be somewhat heated and air conditioned. :D
