Another great article about Michigan crossbow hunting. I wonder if the anti's would call this woman "lazy" for hunting with a crossbow? If she was not disabled and if it were legal and she decided to stop hunting with a vertical bow and hunt instead with a crossbow, would it make her any less of a hunter? Would she instantly become unethical? How does it effect the guy on the next 40 now that she has hung up her compound and is hunting with a crossbow instead? When I read this story, all I see is a great story about a woman who is enjoying the outdoors and is good at hunting. It's a shame that others can't see past this simple truth and if she was not disabled would deny her the freedom to make her own choice of weapon. If your wife was a non-hunter and if using a crossbow was a user friendly means for introducing her to the sport, why would you be opposed to that?

Yes, I am anti-crossbow.
I do not think that someone who would use a crossbow is lazy.
I think any and all succesful hunting experiences special.
I also see a great story about a woman who is enjoying the outdoors and is good at hunting.
I believe her methodology is ethical.
I don't have a wife. My girlfriend hunted with a bow last year. I asked her if she would like to hunt with a crossbow and she declined. If it gets legalized and she decided to take a deer in that manner, I am sure it would be an incredible experience.
The only real difference between you and I is that I love archery and the tradition of bow hunting. I am concerned about the imapct on current season length, and effect of the herd on the public land I currently hunt.
If I ever see you in the woods with your crossbow I will help you track your deer. I'll drag it out for you, and intently appreciate your story. Taking a deer in any legal manner is incredible!
However, I am opposed to the complete lagalization of crossbows for reasons I have stated here. What more can I say?

Maybe not turn every crossbow thread into a "crossbow debate"?

I didn't turn anything here into a debate, I answered Munsters specific questions.

TOW,
Some seem to want to have that debate or else they would make legitimate posts about a cool hunting story without antagonizing comments. Everybody likes a good hunting story.

FWIW, I have no problem with anybody using this thread to go on the record and call this woman lazy for using a crossbow. In fact, if that's the way you truly feel I'd encourage it! ;)
(If you would also be so kind as to indicate whether you are a MBH member when making the lazy comments, I'd appreciate that also.)

I would not call her lazy at all, because that is the only think she can use. She can no longer pull back her bow, so she got a permit to use a crossbow. I think that is great, and love to see people being successful in situations like that.
I would call a person that is perfectly fine, and can pull back a bow without effort. This person does not bow hunt currently, just gun hunts opening day. But if this bill was to pass, would go out, buy a crossbow rig it with the biggest scope at the shop. Then proceed to take it out 1 week before bow season starts, just like he does with his gun, fling some arrows, then go out hunting. That person in my mind is lazy.
Not saying anyone on here that would use a crossbow if the bill was to pass, is like this. But I bet everyone on here knows someone who would do that. That is 1 of the many reason I do not want full inclusion of crossbows. Call it selfish, say that is what happens right now with compounds, say I'm wrong in every way, I don't care its just my opinion.

Due to a member's somewhat disparaging remark about the subject of the article and its vailidty I sent an email to the author which included the quote from the post and asked for his response. I have, with the author's permission, done a copy/paste of his reply.
Milton,
Thanks for contacting me. The person who posted the message about Cheryl Westbrook obviously doesn't know what they are talking about. The woman was in a serious automobile accident and qualified for a crossbow permit as a result of the injuries she suffered in that accident. End of story. It amazes me that people will post comments criticizing others even though they don't have anything in the way of facts to support their opinion!

Whit, I'm not sure who made the disparaging comment but I hope you don't think my post was questioning the validity of the story. I just questioned the need to make a smart remark towards those against crossbows....the story itself was cool and like I said, we all enjoy a good hunting story. The editiorial posted with it was unnecessary however. Some of us, even though we are not so sure on the full inclusion thing, still fully support those that hunt within the law regardless of weapon choice....and more importantly, will continue to if and when crossbows become legal during archery season.

Nope Swamper, twern't you. It matters not who made the comment (it was deleted by another mod. As for my comment about Richard Smith's reaction you can take that post to the bank.
