Heres the talking points they list on theyre site. They dont look to difficult to shoot down;)
Here some talking point to be used when you contact your Senator:
1. The crossbow is not archery equipment. Michigan’s archery deer season was established in 1937 for hunting with hand-held bows. In 1940, the Attorney General ruled that a crossbow is not a hand held bow and, therefore, not legal for archery deer hunting.
2. Crossbows in bow season do not retain and recruit hunters as promised. Hunter numbers, both young and old, are also declining in states like Arkansas and Ohio where crossbows are allowed during the bow season.
3. Allowing Crossbows in the archery deer season of a major deer producing state like Michigan will have a detrimental impact on all deer hunting seasons, including the archery season. Firearm hunters already complain that too many bucks are taken before November 15.
4. The archery deer season combines maximum hunter participation with minimum resource impact, a concept that should be valued, preserved and protected for future generations to enjoy.
5. Both the Social Security Administration and AARP agree that age is not a disability. Seniors are healthier and living longer that at any time in history. For those who are physically unable to use conventional archery equipment, Michigan has a system in place that provides both crossbow and modified bow options.
6. The Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) is opposed the allowing crossbows in the archery deer season. For each of the past six years, pro crossbow resolutions have failed to be adopted at the annual convention. Per Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) Policy, "MUCC supports long archery seasons for deer that provide generous recreational opportunity and days afield with relatively low impact on the resource. We (MUCC) support crossbow hunting during firearm seasons only, not in conflict with archery seasons. Because ease of use and effectiveness approaches that of a firearm, crossbow hunters need less time afield for each deer taken than archers and would threaten the length, quality, and value of the archery seasons."
I am going to e-mail the MUCC about that last one, Even though the recent vote was a few points shy of 66%, they definately had a majority supporting crossbows. The mucc and mbha should remove that one.
Thats another talking point for the senate meeting.
