I typically take harnesses apart that aren't productive or have some wear and tear, but recently started thinking more about taking all harnesses apart and replacing with new line as a winter project.Does anyone else replace harness line in addition to replacing the line on your reels?

Yes to both.

I never put a harness back onto a storage spool, use it once and junk it.
Winter time strip them all down and rebuild them.
I re use everything but line and hooks.

Absolutely, you've got nothing but time and harnesses only take a second.

Big Bob, not really next door to you, but Fishing Tackle Grab Bag on M15, just North of Davison has a great assortment of beads, blades, clevis ect. You could always pick some up if you ever take a trip out to Halloway, Grab Bag is about 4 miles south.

BPS, Gander, Cabelas, Franks - all have a good selection. Next January hit the fishing shows - you can really stock up then.....

Hicks Outdoors in Clio has a ton of beads blades, and all of the other things you will need to build crawler harnesses

Yup, you definitely need to replace the line on harnesses. Not only that, but the hooks as well. Keep up on those two things and youll boat more fish.

Franks Great Outdoors in Linwood has one of the best selection of beads and blades you will find anywhere.

Any preference to running 2 or 3 hooks? I prefer 2 hooks and if I ever needed to add a 3rd hook, I could add on a stinger hook, but have never had a reason to.
I tied up a half dozen harnesses the other night. Not real difficult or time consuming to tie up a bunch of bladeless harnesses with the quick change clevises.

Thanks for the input and I hope this helps those who are just starting out using harnesses.

Anyone build harnesses with Power Pro or similar line? If so how do you tie on the hooks? Thanks Mel

I used to tie them with Fireline, but didnt like them at all. They tangle up too easy compared to stiffer mono or fluorocarbon because the line is so limp.

Anyways, I tied everything the same as i do when i tie mono harnesses....Palomar for the treble and a snell for the single.;)

I've bought some harnesses that use steel leader instead of mono. Any thoughts on those?

....Tried those too, and even made my own for awhile. They hold up great unless you kink them, then they break easily. Another problem is after a few fish flopping around in the net the wire gets twisted up between the hooks. Because the wire has memory, it kinda coils up a bit and the rear hook wont run true. The tail hook will have a helicopter effect when this happens...But, as long as they dont kink or get coiled up they work great. The durability cant be beat.

When i made mine i used 20# coated wire. I crimped on the treble, snelled the single and crimpled on my barrel swivel to finish it off.
