View Full Version : I now recognize that crossbows are guns, but what are pistols?

I've seen the light. I now recognize that crossbows are guns because they have a stock which you place against your shoulder just as you do with a gun. They are indeed crossgun, as it were. One thing they certainly ain't is "real" archery equipment. No sir, no way, no how.

My dilemna is that I was recently out plinking with a .22 caliber pistol and noticed that it doesn't have a stock, which as we all know is evidence for whether or not a weapon is a gun. As a new convert to the definition of a gun being based on whether the weapon has a stock that you place against your shoulder, well, this lack of a stock on the pistol kind of shook me up. Cleary the pistol fails my recently adopted definition of what a gun is.

To add insult to injury, I was holding the pistol in one hand when I squeezed the trigger. This troubled me greatly because the only other weapon I own that I hold in one hand while firing it is my compound bow.

So, now I find myself in a quandary, and I need some help from my friends who previously persuaded me that a crossbow is a gun because it has a stock that you place against your shoulder. Am I also correct in my understanding that my compound bow and pistol are also one and the same? Can anyone help me sort through this dilemna?

Does your 'pistol' have a safety??????? Well, then, it's most definitely a "modified " crossgun. You have a permit for that-thar thingy???? ;)

My pistol doesn't have a safety, you squeeze the trigger, the thing shoots. I also shoot it verticle although I hear gangbaggers shoot them on their side.:)

Now I'm genuinely at a loss. The experts at Wikipedia say that a crossgun is a bow??? But my belief is that it's a gun since it has a stock. You agree don't you Butter21?

But a pistol doesn't have a stock and the Wiki gurus say that a pistol is a gun??? How can that be? Can someone tell me how a pistol can be a gun since it doesn't have a stock?

This is giving me a headache. Yesterday I registered crossgunhaters.com as the domain name for my new website, but now I'm drifting towards uncertainty again. Maybe I'll need to launch confusedaboutcrossbows.com instead.

This is all so mentally overwhelming and deeply confusing.

With the troubles you're experiencing I hesitate to point you toward the difference between "bolt" and "arrow" to help you distinguish between weapons.:yikes:

I know that arrows have been shot from a .410 shotgun and I would bet that a Contender with a .410 barrel could shot a bolt too.:)

I can't even believe in 2008 we are even having this conversation about crossbows..............the entire crossbow controversy has become very disgusting and shouldn't even be happening.

"Bolts"?

"Guns"?

Now we are talking. We need to legalize Captive Bolt Guns for deer hutning.

Man, would that defuse that silly little argument that "Crossbowers don't have to make the draw in the presence of the deer!"

With a Captive bolt gun we got to get close enough to press it against a deer's forehead.

The ultimate challenge.. even tougher than putting salt on his tail.

No kidding! The last visit to my ARCHERY pro shop for bolts/quarrels/arrows for my crossbow the guy took this long arrow thing from a box to make the custom bolts. I thought hey that's an arrow! But with a new nock installed on the trimmed shaft I was at ease again.
He said here are your crossbow bolts when he finished. I wouldn't have beleived it if I hadn't seen the transformation for myself. I came to terms with the name for the ammunition. I figure it translates to short arrow.

You will have the same quandry with your guns too. My shotgun uses shells but my pistol and my rifle use bullets. My muzzle loader uses bullets too but I have to add all the powder and stuff to make it go boom. It boggles the mind!

Unlike your pistol, your bow requires two hands in order to shoot an arrow and doesn't require a trigger. With a nice solid rest I'm pretty sure I could take a very accurate one handed shot with a crossbow.

Add a stock to your pistol and you'll have a rifle.

Add a stock, required trigger mechanism and a safety to your bow and you'll have a crossbow.

It's amazing what happens when you add a stock and a safety to something that requires a trigger in order to function.

Also, according to some we can base legal definitons, universal similarities and establish use in certain seasons based on the noise they make, effective range, the rate they are taxed and hunter success rates.

I am amazed that your pistols and rifles perform with just bullets, I am sure they would be much more effective with the proper cartridge.

Oh I get it! It's a verbiage lesson. In order to buy ammunition for my guns I need to ask for cartridges to get the complete item. If I asked for bullets I might only get reloading supplies as just the bullets. But what about a shotgun? They call those shells. Should I not ask for .223 shells or 12 gauge shells? And instead ask for cartridges as well? If I asked the guy for .223 shells for my rifle I am sure he would have had to involve other staff members to figure out that I indeed wanted "cartridges" in the .223 caliber.
I sure am glad when I was bolt/quarrel shopping I asked for bolts. Otherwise they may have sold me tiny arrows!

Just like "technically" MI has an "Archery" season, but I have never, ever heard it called that until crossbow guys made a point to remind us.

Calling it "Archery" season may raise an eyebrow in MI, the same way asking for a box of "cartridges" would at a gunshop.;)

If your projectile is launch with a string you are using a BOW.
If your projectile is launch with an explosion (like gun power) you are using a gun.

Being the proud owner of a "Crossgun" I've tried and tried to figure out a way to chamber a 30.06 CARTRIDGE.

Can anyone give me hint how I can do that?

You have the wrong caliber of crossgun. If you want a 30 06 crossgun, for say elk hunting, you will have to have yours rechambered for the bigger cartridge.
