FALL TURKEY HUNT APPROVED
LANSING--The Natural Resources Commission (NRC) today
approved a fall wild turkey hunt, opening 17 units in
Michigan, comprising approximately 27,632 square miles. The
Director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources
will provide specific season dates and quota recommendations
in June. Season dates and quotas will be based on spring
nesting success.
The application period for a fall turkey license is July 1,
through August 1, 2000. Fall Turkey Application Guides will
be available at local DNR offices or any one of the 1,700
authorized license dealers throughout Michigan by July 1.
Last fall, 15,993 hunters harvested 6,523 birds; nearly a 41
percent hunter success rate.
Turkey numbers should be excellent in areas open for fall
hunting. Mild winter weather resulted in good survival. Good
spring nesting conditions should produce a good crop of
young birds. With an increasing number of turkeys in
southern lower Michigan, hunters living in this area should
look at opportunities for turkey hunting close to home.
