A buddy and I went up to Houghton Lake for a three day fishing trip this past week, fished Wednesday night through Friday evening and came back this morning. I was told that there was a new authority in charge of the lake and they were doing a lot to eliminate some of the millfoil and non-native vegetation and it seemed to have helped. The fishing was a lot better than previous years. Over the three day period we landed 10 walleye, 10 crappie, 5 rock bass, 1 largemouth, and 6 pike. 4 walleye and 4 crappie were keeper size, so Thursday night we had a fish fry. Lost several at the boat as well and strike was so vicious it bit my jig clean off without a fray on the line. Fished exclusively in about 9-10 feet of water about 1/2 mile in front of the McDonalds on the South shore. There were a handful of other boats fishing the same area and landing there fair share of fish on slip bobbers. Used 3/8 oz jigs tipped with Gulp 3" emerald shiner while trolling and drifting depending on the wind. Lots of steady action.
