long time bow hunter here that had to give it up about five years ago to a sore shoulder and locking elbow. I heard that crossbows can be used by all now for hunting deer. First of all is this true...

And if so.... What is a good one to buy. Or if anyone has a used one for sale let me know...

I wouldn't rush right out and buy one just yet.

The bill seems to be moving along pretty good, but it is doubtful it will all pass in time for thsi year's season.

As far as what to buy - Buy the best one that you can afford. Stick with name n brands such as TenPoint, Horton, Excalibur, Parker and Stryker (Bowtech).

IF you can find a place that stocks several different brands and will let you shoot them take them all for a test shoot and see which bow fits you.

You can find some used ones on ArcheryTalk in the crossbw forum want ads.

Good luck.. hopefully this bill will become law and keep you in the game..

The legislation passed the House and has now been passed on to the senate. It will be September at the earliest before anyone knows whether it will make it through the senate.

Meanwhile, there's a Natural Resource Commission Workgroup that has been reworking the criteria for crossbow approval for those with disabilities. I'm not clear exactly how it's going to end up, but all indications are that it's going to be a much more equitable standard than the nonsensical standards that are currently in place. Once that process is complete you very well may be able to qualify for a crossbow permit, regardless of how the pending legislation turns out.

VA passed and moved quickly when they became legal here. I think they were waiting on printing the game law books they hand out until the legal end finished their part. I want to say they approved them in late July or August. Season started Sept 15th for urban deer.

EdGo to a shop that sells them and try several out to see. I'm using the Desert Stryker as my main hunter. Narrow fast, accurate and quiet. The Tenpoints have the best crank option if you need that. The Excalibur are simple, field repairable and proven over time. They are wider in the limb width. Parker has some new models out and the Cyclone looks ot be a good hunter. Each has trade offs on features and big price differences too. Tenpoints cost more but are very well made and have excellent warranty and customer service. Excalibur is similar but cost less due to being a recurve design and no cams. I've owned just about all and prefer the ones with cams and a rope cocker. I presently have the Desert Stryker, a Tenpoint X2 and a Browning xbow. Yes even Browning once made an xbow. I've got a stash of $$$ for something and I'm still making a decision. looking hard at the Parker Black Cyclone as I do a lot of ground blind hunting. They're $699 MSR for the kit.
