I am staying on Duck Lake for a week starting next weekend. I am hoping to locate some smallmouth and perch, as well as some kayaking. I may try to take the boat to Grand Traverse one day weather/conditions permitting for smallies, also.
Are the smallies in the shallows on Grand Traverse? (or is it early due to the cold, or is it late??)
Mayflies...have the biggest hatches occured yet?

I can't answer on the mayflies except to say that I don't think they've happened yet. Things are pushed back a little bit up here.
I also can't vouch for smallies in the shallows in the Bay, but I can tell you I caught a couple of pigs near the mouth of the Boardman last week. Take a look at my pictures. Some guys who were snorkeling when I caught them said there were a lot of bass bedding where I caught mine and througout the stretches nearby.
A couple weeks ago I was taking a walk on the beach near the state park and saw some guys fishing offshore about 100 yds. they were hooking into ALOT of fish--5 or 6 in about 15 mins while i was watching--they were keeping them so i didnt think they were smallies, but who knows. it looked to me like they were fishing jerkbaits--but again could be wrong
i have fished duck a bit on a yak--i mostly fished in the morning and evenings and fished near the reeds with top waters or a soft plastic-or even my flyrod-i have done ok--im sure there are better ways to fish that lake--but thats all i got
