Great Huron River access not too far from A^2, parks 7,8 & 9 on the map. Wading for smallmouth is excellent.

Yeah, the Huron River is one of the places to try. Lots of spots along the river with access (Huron river metroparks, Ann Arbor Parks). Access is great, however, fishing is poor. I am not really sure why people get excited about 10-12 inch smallies. There is even a book about fly fishing the Huron River for smallies, and most of the pictures in the book are with guys holding up small fish (10 inch) with maybe one or two in the 16-18 range. I really have not fished the Huron all that much for smallies, but have caught some 16-18 inch smallies from Ford and Bellevelle lakes. They are each also suppose to be ok for walleyes, I have only caught 3 so far, in about 6 outings. There are other lakes to try in the Pinckney state park system, not sure how good, but lots of lakes to try, some without any homes on them. Also, Kent lake is suppose to be one of the better fishing lakes around, with walleye and bass. Could try there. Good luck. Let me know how you did. I would personally stay away from the Huron River.

If you have a small boat, I would recommend 4 mile lake near Dexter. Lots of pike and bass that usually go after top water lures. Not alot of big fish, but plenty to keep you busy.

They used to have a boat rental on 4-mile. Dont know if its still there. I have caught smallies in the Huron River at Hudson Mills metror park just downstream from the rapids up to 20in. Using crayfish tails. Just the tails. But thats early just about the opener.

Last time I was at Hudson mills, some guys were doing pretty good fly fishing for smallies with green wooliebuggers. There are some nice size buglemouth bass (carp) in there also that a guy was catching with corn.
