Is there a minimum length requirement for boats on Lake Erie and the Detroit river?

I've checked the Mich. DNR site and didn't see anything about it. My dad was told by someone that they have to be 20ft.

Thanks, Matt.

There is no length requirements for any body of water in Michigan that I have ever heard of. Just use common sense. There are alot of 12' shallow V's running the river, and also on calm days you may see a 12 or 14'er out on Erie, but you have to keep a watchful eye on the weather, before and during your outing, preferrably with a radio. You must also beware of freighter traffic in the river, which on some days is unbelievable, and can throw some massive swells.

As long as he's got a good head on his shoulders, he's good to go!

Also keep a look out for the party barges, they think bigger equals the right-of-way,and that's before the alcohol

i have a 1956 mahogany runabout. 14 ft. as a teenager i worked at the bell isle aquarium and drove my boat to work every day. weather permiting. there is not minimum requirements. you can use any sized craft you wish. witness personal watercraft. a legal boat. i believe one intrepid sailer set a record crossing the atlantic in a boat that was six foot long.
theres a website for small boat records. very intersting reading.
