how can you sit there and bash tiger for "his" opinion?..You have yours and he's intitled to his..and besides..he's right...Hockey is hurting ...this year was a great exception...but what if say....Calgary and the Ducks were in the finals...how many do you think would have watched?? And me being a fan, I'll tell you this much.. I may have watched a little here and there, but not nearly as much as I did this year...basically if your team is in it you'll watch. Hockey is still hurting for viewers badly...and the networks that carry it.."VS"..not everyone can get it...so if you're going to pick on Tiger because he's not a fan...you don't have much to worry about. jmo

Ifyou think the "face" of the NHL, Cindy Crosby, was given a Monica every chance they had by the announcers watch a golf telecast and hear the complete reverance afforded Tiger. There is only one golf announcer who dares to say anything critical of Tiger and that is Johnny Miller. All others do not want to incur his wrath for fear he will not talk to them and yes it happens. Tiger however compared to Crosby has earned the allocades. Cindy still has to deliver.

Maybe "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all", is a bit extreme. But then again being TOTALLY honest , is sometimes not a good thing. "I really don't watch the sport that much, so I can't make a honest comment", would have been a much better answer. JMO

They are two totally different sports, played in totally different environments. Woods is obviously not a hockey fan.....big deal. Hockey is thought of as a "northern" sport.....golf is more of a "southern" sport. Again, they are just different. Tiger says nobody really watches hockey anymore, well he's kind of right. Unless your local team is playing, good luck finding them on the tube. I would rather he say something like he did then try to make it sound like he knows about hockey.
I do however have to take a quote from one of the respondents to the blog though;
"golf is a sport that hockey players play during their off-season of being a professional athlete".....priceless!

I sit here knowing how the NHL has respect for Tiger and WG opinion on Tiger and think he should have handled it differently. Lighten up, if I payed no attention to Golf, and Tiger loved my skills in hockey, when asked who I thought might win the PGA (Tiger or Phil) Id at least say, "Well to be honest I havent had much time to watch Golf, but what Tiger is doing is great so more power to him."
Do a little research and most fans are upset and some have written letters to Nike for a statement back from Tiger..

He's the Sidney Crosby of the golf world world. What do you expect. The question had nothing to do with him, so he blew it off.

I don't care what Tiger Woods thinks about hockey!
Who cares if he doesn't think people watch it much anymore. To tell you the truth, I'd rather have a root canal or a rectal exam than sit and watch golf on TV! I honestly can't understand why ANYONE golfs. Talk about a snooze-fest.
John
EDIT:
Strike that comment. I'd rather have a root canal AND a rectal exam at the SAME TIME as opposed to watching golf.

First of all he's right. Outside of the original 6 cities and a few north/northeast markets the NHL doesn't draw well at all. It doesn't draw casual fans to the sport the way the NFL, NBA and MLB do.
But the real question is who do you care?...your team just won the cup!
I don't get it. In the days after the Wings won the cup these forums, talk radio etc were filled with fans whining about Sidney Crosby, the announcers, the media coverage, the referees, and on and on and on.
I've never seen a group of fans so miserable in the face of a championship. I don't get. Maybe that's why I'm not a hockey fan:dizzy:

I do care about the wings winning, I havent complained about the refs, fans, sid the kid, or annoucers. I just find Tiger interesting because he is one of my favorite PGA golfers. This just bothers me because I am a hockey fan through and through(been playing since 3rd grade) but also a golf fan.
GO WINGS!

The bottom line is that Tiger Woods downgraded a sport that's been good to him, from charity appearances at golf tournaments to fans asking about when "hockey's Tiger Woods" will arrive. (http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1707253,00.html?xid=feed-cnn-topics)

To his credit, Woods is the one person who almost single handidly brought golf back to the public eye.Because of a lull in viewership, golf was on a downward spiral also. Once he retires, I wonder who the fickle fan will tune in to see? Are there any Jacks, Arnies, Gary''s and Tom's out there to keep you glued to your T.V. set? When Gretzky was traded to L.A., fans (?), were coming out of the woodwork, Hollywood star actors were there to see and be seen. Once he left, so did they. Every sport has it's hard core supporter, Unfortunately, in today's game, T.V. is the ruler of the roost. Yes, as many have said, Tiger might be right. As for myself, I wouldn't walk across the street to watch a soccer game, but millions do.

I agree 100%.
Golf is for people who can't fish!
A golfer has NO room to talk. Nobody watches Golf if he isn't playing so tell me how that's any different than people not caring about hockey if their team isn't playing? It's not, Tiger needs to shut his cake hole because he's the last one who has a right to talk since nobody cares about golf, a game, yes game, not sport. Anything John Daly can do professionally and be drinking and smoking during it isn't a sport. - Bryon

I think the only reason hockey is hurting a little is the damn VS network. Don't get that crap here in OK unless you have dish network and when you have 30 mph sustained winds on a daily basis....dish is not the way to go! And I'm sure that it is a similar situation in other states as well. Gimme some ESPN or ABC or somethin and I'll watch EVERY game. I don't think people watch golf....it just sits on that channel while they nap!

I'll take ANY channel that airs in OK and will gimme some dang hockey. Don't care if it switched to freakin Lifetime.
Its on VS because ESPN doesn't want it. Period. Not totally true, Bettmen doesn't want it on ESPN because VS will pay the NHL more. ESPN has contacted and met with the NHL a few times to get it on according to hockey night in Canada so take that for what you will.

My point exactly. ESPN won't pay more for it because they can make more money airing World Series of Poker re-runs.

Now cut half of those teams out of the league and the NHL would have a lot less worries.

My point exactly. ESPN won't pay more for it because they can make more money airing World Series of Poker re-runs.Your spot on. ESPN and ABC, both owned by Disney, had a NHL deal a number of years ago and they LOST their respective shirts. The package paid the NHL rights fees of 140 million if I recall. When it could ABC dropped out cutting the rights fees to something like 70 million for ESPN only. When their deal expired they dropped out. Hell I think every network has tried to make a go of the NHL at sometime. Remember Fox and the "glowing pucks". They all lost and got out when their deal was done. NBC came in and made an Arena Football type deal which was a "partnership". No rights fees but revenue sharing AFTER they, NBC, recover expenses. NBC recently exercised their option to extend the deal for another 2-3 years. Then the NHL made a deal with Versus who is paying something how much I am not sure. Let's remember they, Versus, are a relative start up trying to get cable carriage and EYEBALLS. If ESPN wanted back in and paid rights fees Bettman would JUMP at the chance. Reason NHL is trying it's hardest to get exposure and ESPN is carried on most, if not all cable systems, not so with Versus. NHL will get more and broader coverage when and if their National ratings warrant it. Until then those of us in this area should be glad we have Fox Sports,(and Mickey and Kenny) Versus in many cases and even the CBC for a grateful few. Let's face it without the salary cap in the NHL it would probably disappear since they do not have the HUGE TV rights fees like the NFL, NBA, and MLB.

Dubs is dead on.
going to sound like a hater, especially after winning the cup, but in this day of salary caps and the wings salary nearly cut by 40%......
how come my ticket prices are going up?! (don't get me started on joe bucks! )
I better not be paying for that team with the 2nd largest payroll in baseball !
