Here's a question:
I know that you have to play in a finals game or at least play half (41) games during the season to be on the cup.
So Downey makes it, Kopecky makes it, but then you see the other "black aces" hoopin' it up in the locker room and it made me wonder... they don't make it, do they?
If you look at the history of the cup and who gets their name on it, I think it's getting a little out of hand really.
it used to be players, owner, coach(es) or about 25-30 names, tops. The average in the last 10 years or so is over 50. (our own DRW with 55 the most so far)
So does Howard get his name on the cup? Erickson? What about Meech? doesn't quite seem right, does it?

The team has to petition the NHL to put them on there. My question is ....Justin Abdulkater ? He was in the parade today after a one game try out skate. Has he even been signed?
I hope Meech gets on it. He has the hardest shot on the team. Jimmy Howard should be on it just because he was there when we needed him...and at the time we NEEDED him. Erickson, I don't know....but why not

I don't know... I just hope they spell my name right this time!

I guess the "Why not" for me is that it kinda diminishes the luster a wee bit.
the stipulations as I understand them seems pretty fair; play 1/2 the regular season and/or play at least one shift in a playoff game.
Black Aces can train all they want, but if you don't play you don't get your name on it.
heck, even as a player, how could you really feel great about having your name on the trophy and know that you didn't actually play? Howard played less than 10 games during the regular season, I think quincy played less than 10 as well. Ericsson played what... 2-3?!!
play one shift in the playoffs, I get it. you dressed.
not dressed for a game and you played less than 1/2 the season - no name.
a really bad analogy, but it's like the premise of the movie RUDY. guy gets his brains beat in all those years, tons of heart, but for all that effort he won't be recognized as being on the team UNTIL he actually dresses one game.

the 2nd issue is ; with a roster of players and coaches that in total, may hit the 30 number, where in the heck do you find 25 other names to put on the cup for a total of 55?!! shoot, is AL on there too?!!!
As it sits now you have to play 40 reg. season games or 1 Stanley cup final game. So the guys they brought up during the injuries the team was having no don't make it, unless the wings petition for them to be on it, which I don't think they should IMO. - Bryon

I think if the guys who actually play the game and fully appreciate the significance of having their name on the cup petition for a players inclusion that is good enough for me.

What about Mac? He just got there. Where can the rules for this be found?

What do they do when there is no more room for names? Add to the cup, and make it bigger? It seems like it's been the same size since I was a teenager, and I'm 70 now. Always wondered about that.

The cup comes apart, they take full ring out and replace it. They send full ring to the hockey hall of fame. Check here www.legendsofhockey.net Go to "Silverware"

Mac's on because he played in the playoffs. Downey's on it too even though he never played - but he was on the roster for the regular season and played in over 1/2 the games.

What a fantastic read Gman12. Thanks for clearing up a lifelong question. As soon as I have the computer all to myself, I'm going back to read that site in it's entirety. Thanks again.

I heard another great story on the radio yesterday,, about the Cup.
Some guy called in to the radio and said that in either 71 or 73 when the Flyers won,, they sent the stick boy around the lockerroom with a pad of paper and had everyone write their name down,, the way they wanted it etched on the Cup. After he gets everyone's name on the paper,,, he writes his own name on the top of the list,,,,,,,LMAO,, They end up carving this kids name on the Cup,, then later on after figuring out who he is,, they have to XXXXXXXX out his name,,,, Don't know if it's true or not but the guy that called in was pretty confident.
