well, just got back from turkey hunting in Alpena. got up there last saturday, unpacked and hit the woods at about 3:00. was in the woods about an hour before I got a gobble. used my slate call and box call. tom was gobbling from some thick aspen. I didn't approach too close in. set up two hens and one jake. i'd call, he'd gobble. this went on for over an hour. did some soft calling, waited about 15 minutes, bird still wouldn't come in. moved my setup twice in a circular area but didn't move in any closer, didn't want to spook him, tried letting him think the hens were in different areas. finally I couldn't take it any longer and moved in closer, and he quit calling. did get a look at him as he was "walking" away, probably laughing his ass off. was a big tom, but couldn't see the beard.

day two: birds gobbling at daylight, but when they hit the ground, they shut right up. never did see anymore after that. saw lots of deer, one four pointer so far in velvet.

day three: no turkeys, none gobbling. hunting partner saw a tom with two hens at a distance. tried calling but he wasn't interested -- calls or decoys.

day four: same thing, no gobbling, zip, nada. friend had a coyote charge his decoys then realized they weren't real and took off.

still had a great time though, outdoors for four days, no phones, no work, peace and quiet. came back home relaxed. looked at getting a turkey as a bonus. have a new perspective on hunting the spring turkey -- this is my first spring hunt -- goes up on my list ahead of deer. this is experience is what I would call "true hunting", calling, trying to lure that bird in, stalking, etc.

good luck to everyone who has yet to get out.
