My kids were given permission to use their late grandfathers Elgin outboard motor. The only problem with it, the fuel can's fuel filter set up was all gummed up. I never saw one like it. The pipe itself looked like brake line. It went about 6" down, then a 90 deg. bend with a screen on it. I'm not sure if this was home made or not. Anyhow, I need some help to either replace (which is what I want to do) as it was. Which means I would need to know where to pick up the metal screen material. Or I could put in a "inline filter", I would also like to know where the best place to pick up one as well.
Temporarily I just cut above 90 deg. bend and reamed out the pipe to get it started. By the way, the old girl started on the 5th pull. And ran great for them. But, I don't want to let them keep using the motor without a filter.

Thanks

Although not in running condition at the moment.........

For a fuel filter I'd go to a lawnmower/small engine repair shop and pick up an in tank filter for a lawn tractor. Attach the filter to the your down tube with a piece of corresponding size gas hose. :) I think I've even seen those filters at Home Depot in there sparse but available lawn mower parts section. ;)

If the motors that old and has not been used recently I'd highly recommend changing the rubber waterpump impellor. Those things will dry rot away and you'll run the risk of quickly overheating and ruining the motor. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! ;)

If possible, please post a pic of the old girl, love them old Elgins! :D

any in line truck filter should work just find one that you can attach with fuel hose of equal size

That's what I was thinking, easier to clean as well.

I used the clear plastic ones.I liked them because you could see if you had any water .I have also used the ones for Ford pick ups they are metal but smaller if space is a problem
