View Full Version : Throttle cable adjustment?

I've got an '84 19' Sea Nymph CC w/'84 Suzuki 115hp and single lever morse control. Last night on the way back to the harbor the motor started slowing down all on its own. I had the control buried and couldn't go faster than about 8-10 mph. Could this be a throttle cable adjustment problem? Can I fix it myself? From the control side or the engine side? The cables seem to be fairly new and I thought I'd get some input before tearing into it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Richard

How does it run at low throttle? It might not be the cable if you haven't had any other problems in the past. With its age, look at the Fuel filter. If its clogged, the engine would be starved of gas at higher RPM, making it act like its at "low Throttle".

Checked the fuel filter and it's okay. Now I think it may be some kind of rev limiter due to a bad impeller? Anyone know what it costs to have an impeller replaced?

Never done a Jap motor, but its shouldn't be too difficult. Last oen I did was on a 200hp Merc OB. Took about 20 minutes and $20.

Richard Take apart lever control and see if adjustment is lose.Odds are thats the problem.Onces it apart fire it up and put it into gear and watch the cable. Its either one side or the other/motor end,Mich

Before you take anything apart I would move the control to wide open throttle & go back & look at the engine & see if it moves the throttle plates or not. This should rule out your cables. After that start with a compression test & let us know what you find.

I had my son on the boat moving the throttle back and forth and everything seems to be perfect. Took out all the plugs (4) and they look good. Fuel filter is clean. Another site said that my motor has a rev-limiter to protect against overheating and won't allow it to go above 3000 rpm in such cases, so I think it might be the impeller. (?) Even though I don't have a tach on my boat this sounds like it might be the culprit.

If you are going to work on the impeller, the marine shop will sell you just the impeller. But you can get the whole kit including the housing, seals, and O-rings for about double the price ($40). If you are going to replace the impeller anyway, you have to remove almost all of these parts to get to it. Better just do the whole thing right now and not have to worry about it next year.
