Hi, I need some help purchasing a kayak. I’m new to kayaking and not really sure what to look for? I’m still in college so my price range is $350 or lower, I know that is going to limit the quality of my kayak. I looked at some kayaks at Gander Mountain and they had a few for $300...Has anybody ever looked at these kayaks and their quality?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try Costco if you or someone has a membership.

I would try to find a used one. Depending on what you'll use it for I've found that my Perception Carolina at 14 1/2' is about right for most of my fishing, small lake and river paddling.

at Dunham's you can get a Coleman for $200.

I have two of them and they are "fine" -- don't hold a straight line as well as a $3000 kayak, but not bad at all.

hmmm. i don't see it on their website but they had them in the store last time I was there... they are white bottom/red top.. price usually $189-$229.

How are you transporting it and where are you kayaking?

Check craigslist. You should be able to find a good kayak in your price range and alot of them include a paddle. A decent paddle will cost another $80.00 + if you buy a new kayak. I would try to get one in the 12 - 15' range.

I remember someone asking a similar question recently on here. I've used a lot of different yaks, and you really need to decide what you'll mainly use it for and then go to demo days at a store that has many different makes and models to see what fits you well. My big fat polock dad rented a sleek performance kayak that he proceeded to roll and swamp in the Jordan river several times. He had no business in that kayak. It didn't fit his size or skill level. Most kayak shops or sporting goods stores regularly have them. I would agree that it would be better to buy a good used one rather than a cheap new one. If you like your yak you'll use it a lot, if you don't, it'll just collect dust. Look around, there has to be some good used deals in this economy.
