I was chuggin(whippin) in Port Huron last night and went 4 for 7! Can't figure how the 3 I had on got off before getting to the boat! Usually there misses or caught! Had a couple of missed hits also. Didn't see many fish caught around me so I feel lucky! Did catch a plump silver bass-never caught one from boat before, that I can remember, and already 2 this year! Three on blue/silver rap and one on redhead/white NS.

Whew!!!! I thought for a minute that father time past me by again and things changed around me, i.e. (sight, fitness, ambition, family, female attitude and kids walking to the bus stop in the snow!) Thanks for the reaffirmation ggoblue!:) I had heard of the term "whippin", but I thought it was only used at the south end of SCR where the current slackens as it enters LSC. Chuggin to me is when your fishing in the 9to12m/hr current. Just jargon for the area! Seems the term "whippin" has migrated north with the advent of communication technology. I was surprised to see all the whippin posts when I first started reading this forum, but it does seem that most of the posts are LSC area. I think I'll keep "bringing back the day".:coolgleam

Tcat,
Shut the motor off, the current in the river isn't that fast. :yikes:

Chuggin to me is different than whippin.
Whippin is using a rod with weight and leaders. You would set the rig out behind you in a current when anchored.
Chuggin is using a hand line (not a wire line reel) that had on the end a silver lead sinker The sinker had a hole that a piece of braided line went threw and attached to the line was a treble hook. The hook hung down past the bottom of the sinker about 1 inch. You would drift with the current and CHUG this by hand, bouncing off the bottom.

At least thats what I remember from the late 60's, early 70's

PICKEREL is completely different from walleye, they are commonly know as chain pickerel because of the chain like markings on their side, they are in the pike family, in fact a 38 inch pickerel was caught in the northern lower and the dnr was called in and they told them that they were just odd colored pike. i seen the pictures when i went to taxidermy school, where it was mounted, and it was definately pickerel

Thanks FishTales, that speed never set right with me. I think it was an 80's fishin show I heard that on. Didn't know how they measured it, but I always wondered why the debris, sticks, trees and beer cans, never seemed to go that fast past me!!!!:16suspect Cool data on current speed, now maybe when I'm not catching fish the sinker won't feel so heavy!?:o Gotta subtract that extra 6to9 m/hr from my top speed going down river from the big 18hp merc too!! Interesting concept justcatchinum. Seems that type of fishing is justsnagginum. Never heard that before. Very interesting!

justcatchum is right from all that I have ever heard. As far as chugging is concerned any one got any good links to chugging information. I think that is what one of the riverrats that I talk to's favorite method for what he calls " JUST FILLING THE FREEEZER " got a board with grooves cut in it and a hole in middle to grip it and line and a sinker with line and a treble hook and up and down ripping motions if I am correct just drift with current and " CHUG ".

Yes, I've heard it called jerk'in! The best fisherman I ever seen there (Rick-didn't get his last name) called it jerk'in. This guy was good! Had a custom made pencil plug box. The box had trays made of clear plastic that held individual balsa plugs(no plastic). After about 87 or 88 I had heard that this guy moved up north and sold all his equipment!! Whippin, chuggin or jerkin it's all good!:)

Caught my first walleye chugging in the Detroit river when I was about 12 years old I will soon be 69. This is what the setup looks like.

hank when chugging are you drifting down river or keeping up with the current like jigging?

line size..

I am going to give this a shot is why I am asking

Well, I can't dispute what a local elder says, did and shows. Never seen anything like that. What attracts the walleye? Or was the river filled with fish like some of these salmon rivers up north where they used to cast snaggin trebles before it became illegal? That set-up looks new, except for the mono, figure it be fireline or a brade. Do you or your family still chug? OK, I am convinced and corrected. I'm a WHIPPER!:)

And double YUP!!!!

Chuggin is like jigging except with heavy tackle. Unless you are in a strong current boat control is not an issue due to the weight of the sinker.
Ckeck out some of the elders on the N. Channel and you will see at least 1 old woman out there with her dog almost daily...She's chuggin!!! And catching! Not snagging!
I have foul hooked very few chuggin'!

I remember doing it as a kid on the south channel. We would wrap rubber bands aroung the treble hook that would hold the minnows on. Sometimes the fish would prefer that setup over anything else. It was not snagging. The fish were hooked on the inside of the mouth. I had a friend who lived on Harsens who caught a large sturgeon with a chuggin rig.:yikes:It bloodied his hands up real good. Back then we only fished for pickeral, no walleye. And yes, everybody walked uphill in a snow storm both ways.

Thanks, for everyone jumping on board to identify what chuggin is. It is not JUSTSNAGINUM as one person said. I have caught many walleye and very few were snagged and they were let go for another day. I still have 6 of the silver sinkers and old homemade line wraps. I also would tip with a whole minnow or just the head.

Be safe,

In the Dog DAZE of Summer, some of the Bigger baits such as a chuggin ball, get their attention more then a jig will......Try putting on a piece of Balloon, just for some color, dont like to screw with Minnows in the heat of the summer....too much hassle....No need for Stinken bait.....

Sometimes we just take the treble and snag it into a plastic grocery bag and we pull off this weird piece that seems to drive the fish crazy. I couldn't believe how much they like it..

Been using plastic bags for years now. I think the only thing better are minnows we dip just before heading out.
