Saturday the 22nd I took my wife and a friend out, niether one had much turkey hunter experience, my hands would be full. The roost was a bust, the birds were with hens, and went the other way. So we decided to make a circle. My wife ended up missing at 30 yards, at a nice Tom, in some way or another I expected it to happen. We hit several other spots, and in a couple hours we had another Tom going, my wife missed this one at 20 FEET, ouch. Never the less I encouraged her to keep trying, I know that she can shoot a gun, she has taken several deer. We did end up getting into more birds, but my friend moved when there was a silent Tom coming in the back door, and he ended up spooking the others. Sunday off the roost my brother took a nice bird, 8 inch beard and 21 pounds. Not much calling needed, he seen the decoys, a few yelps, boom end of story. Easter lunch time. Monday I had taken off to hunt with a friend of mine, who has never turkey hunted before, but is a heck of a deer hunter. He had hunt K-2nd season. We started out just north of Mecosta, there was a ton of roost activity, but once they hit the ground they shut up. We hunted that spot hard for about 3 hours, with out a gobble, but we did find 90 morels. I had another spot just a couple minutes away, off of 66 north of Remus. We parked the truck at 10am and at 10:17 my friend had his first bird. It was my first sequence on the slate, he answered, we set up one a ridge and called him in. 20 pounds, 10-1/2 inch beard and some nice hooks at 1-1/4 inches. If I had to guess this bird was 3 or 4 years old, and there was another one just as big with him. Tuesday I did not hunt. Wednesday I told another friend that I would pick him up after I got out of work at 6am in the morning. He has area U private land hunt. I decided to stay close to home and hunt near Cedar Springs. Our first spot was a Bomb no birds, really quiet. The second area was completly different, hens yacking all over the place. I knew there had to Toms near buy. We set up in some pines, and before long heard some spitting. I knew there were Toms close, but there was some thick cover between us. So after 30 minutes of trying to pull him though there, we decided to circle. Man do I love when that works. We had gotten within about 150 yards of him and set up. Some heavy purring and cutting broke him loose. After he had gotten to 50 yards, some soft yelps and some leave scraching did the trick. Another fine bird, 10 inch beard, 7/8 inch spurs, and I'd guess around 20+ pounds. It was my friends second in four years. I do have pictures of all these birds, and will send them snail mail. Unless someone can explain to me how to do it over the INTERNET ????.. Like I said so far, so good. After some practice shooting this Friday my wife and her freind will be up to bat agian, I'll post agian next week...
