View Full Version : Jigging with Crystal??

Which would you suggest? Tying a jig directly to Crystal fireline or using a piece of flourocarbon between the Crystal and the jig?
You're going to get a lot of responses to this. I stopped using fireline because it tore up my rods, I had to replace 4 ugly sticks(two of which were big water series) and went to power pro, which IMO, is just as strong, if not stronger and better handling and casting. That being said, I use a leader when ever I use braided line. I use a small swivel to connect the mono to the braid. I use maxima ultra green for the leader and have never had a problem with fish seeing it even in the clearest of water in the SCR. - Bryon

Save yourself a lot of time and grief and just go direct. Fished with a number of tournament pros and many have gone the same route. Some still stick with the barrel swivel leader gig but not the ones I fished with. Better chance to pull it out from a snag direct as well. With the current we have around here stealth is out the window. That bait comes by quick and they will strike. Fishing in a very clear lake with little to no current might be different but in the river I vote for direct. Fished Sunday vert jigging two rods at once. One had crystal and the other chartreuse fireline still on from before crystal came out. Both tied direct to the jig. I am sure you guess which popped two fish on the first drift- the chartreuse. So much for line spooking.. As for eating up my guides not a problem with fireline and non-plastic type rod guide inserts found on low end lighting rods or high end st croix rods.

Since replacing the rods and changing to power pro I haven't had a problem.
The reasoning for the swivel is simple, no line twists, which you get jigging more than people think believe it or not.

The only problem with tying direct is you cant break off in a snag. I busted 2 rods because of this. I would rather replace a jig, then a 100.00 rod...IMO...And it takes the Twist out of the line when jigging depths greater then 20 feet, which is the Min. anyway in the Detroit or St.Clair River systems.

Yeah, I snapped a $100 rod off on a snag too. I got pissed and threw it in the bottom of the boat only to see the handle on my $150 reel go flying! :bonk:

here you go guys if you get a snag run the trolling motor to catch up to the snag and if that dont work, we wrap the line around our arm with clothing on of course and pull, works like a gem.. Dont try and bend the rod to get the snag out other wise you will break a rod.. here is another thing I use as well now and days and I like it allot.. There called South bend fas snaps http://www.gofishin.com/index.cgi?&show_details=11674&cat=240 I use them in med size, makes changing out a jig fast and easy..Cya Slick
PS,,Never broke a Berkly lightining rod yet?????? lots of backbone
