well someone was asking about storing harnesses so I decided to try something different...I made them up about 3 weeks ago but I wanted to see how they worked before i posted them on the site...i must say they ran well with no roll over at all...with this style harness you can run any length leader you like...these photos are of the compartment and boxes that came in my boat...

They certainly don't look like anything I'm running but I watched you and Scott take Jr and myself to school, so I'm paying attention! :)

I find now that I've switched to the quick release clevises....I only need a couple of noodles worth of harnesses with different colored beads......because your always swapping out blades....so I can get by actually with 2 - 12" noodle full of harnesses and just put different colored blades on to change up! I must say though....I have changed many of mine to your one hook system and add a section of crawler for scent....I also have made up some 2 hook harnesses with a longer front hook where I add the section of worm for scent....and then feed on a rubber worm....and have killed they eyes on this with out getting tore up by the silver bass or white perch!!

He is making up spinners instead of a 36" or longer crawler harness.

you just have to make up some short leaders that run from you bb to your short crawler harness...store some different length leaders on pool noodles..its just a different way of storing them without all the tangles from a longer harness...i made up about 50 of them and can keep them in one small plastic container.

Interesting concept, without reinventing the wheel. I'm kind of surprised that it hasnt been thought of before this, or has it?
The only down side I see if there is one, is that now your storing/stocking extra stuff (noodles with leaders and also the harness sections). Where as before it was just a pool noodle or 7 ;) with crawler harness's.
I may have to give Slicks one hook system a try. Has to save on snags and time unhooking fish in the net. Although this year it hasnt been much of a problem yet :(

This concept is similar to the rigs they use a lot in the central and eastern basins of Erie where they use a spinner rig that is based on a piece of wire about 8" long with 2 or 3 hooks and ofter times 2 or 3 blades.

When handlining and pulling spinners you can make them out of Mono or steel wire like these!

Swamprat I take it you dont have any place to store the noodles in the center council is that why you went this way with your harnesses?? One hook harnesses are the way to fly, I showed Radiohead this the other day why I only use one hook harnesses.. reel the fish in, net it, flip the fish out of the net onto the floor of the boat it's unhooked and proceed to put the rod back in the water even before you throw the fish in the live well only way to fly..Cya Slick

brent i gave up on the noodle storage years ago,i've been using the clear plastic boxes for years.if you look close at the bottom box you can see some of my longer harnesses rolled up inside the box.i'm just trying something new and just sharing my idea.

I used to use the one hooks as well, but was getting ripped off too much, but that was before Gulp and other reliable plastics. Can I assume you don't use meat too much with the one hook system?

I really like your way of tying mini harneses.........I think I am going to steal it . I already have an assortment of leads on the boat anyway.

never use meat, it's a dirty word on my boat:lol:.. Even if I wasent useing gulp I still would use a single hook I can have a fish off and the rod back in the water likity split faster then any two hook harness as Radiohead how fast this sytem works:D there is more then that for reasoning why it's better like a bronze hook that can bend out on a snag and you dont lose your whole harness and bring it in and bend it right back into shape and run it again....Cya Slick

Which?? The spinners have been around for about a 100 years or more. The Walleye spinner rigs line the ones in Houghton-laker's photo are based on the familiar Mepps spinner and the spinners used by Bass fishermen.

Not all bait shops will carry spinners like those pictured. The closer to the rivers and Lake St. Clair the more likely you are to find them. These are often home made by local fishermen or the bait shop owner himself. Otherwise, about the only choices will be the Mepps and big name brands intended for Bass and Pike.

Slick is right. We lost some harnesses last night to snags around MC. The ones made with the bronze hooks generally will straighten out the hook and come off the snag. Many times you don't even looks your worm. The multiple hook store bought harnesses we ran were lost the first time they snagged.

Kevin,

When you wireline with spinners like this do you run a crawler/gulp worm? Are you still running this at the end of a long leader. If I remember this time of year we were pulling 45 and 30 foot leads. I am thinking that I need to break out the wirelining reels. Is there a jig for twisting the wire like that?

Yes...just attach those to your leads....I make the twist just with a pair of Needle nose pliers! I add a piece of worm

Don, I wonder if using one of those "Slow Death" hooks would do any good on your harnesses?

I used a pre made spinner rig like those shown when I was a kid. They are called June Bugs. Hildbrandt also makes one. They are a bit more spartan than the ones shown here. I like the colorsd beads and quick change clevis. In Wisconsin where trolling is not allowed we used the June bug with a single hook. We would thread a minnow on the long hook and cast them. They worked great.
