I think I saw more Turkeys hunting in Allegan this morning, than I have in 8 or 10 years of hunting the buggers.
First, at dawn, I hurried into the woods from my truck and only had time to set up 1 deke. The birds were on the oposite side of the road from where I thought they would be, so I wasnt ready. As soon as got my butt up against a tree I saw the first tom walking thru the woods in front of me. He was followed by 4 other toms. Most were jakes but one had about a 6" beard. They wouldnt come in close enough to shoot however. Next a hen pulled up the rear and stayed about 15-30 feet from me for about 20min. She didnt want to leave that hen decoy all by itself suppose. Just as I thought she was ready to leave and I was preparing to skedaddle it back to the truck and drive around to the other side of the section to where the other Toms headed, another jake made his entrance and kept that old hen busy for another 20min.
By the time I got back to the truck I thought it might be too late but I had to try. On the way around the section I saw 2 more birds cross the road in front of me. Finally I got the truck parked and headded out again. Just I started to walk into the woods again, three Toms thundered out from almost under my feet and flew off to the east. I couldnt believe it, I coulda been right at the truck (probably sittin on the tailgate and been in range for these three) What a morning. After I left that spot with no luck at calling in the other 5 Toms after a few hours of sitting, I headed on to another spot, but before I even got there I saw a jake and further down the rod a hen cross in front of me.
Well ow Im sitting here having a sandwich and waiting for my dad to show up for the evening. I am so flusterd I cant decide where to try tonite, Back in the same general area or down the road a few miles to try for some other, (hopefully unmoleseted) birds. I guess well have to Punt.
I let ya know what happens tonite, tomorrow. ;)

Well, yesterday afternoon started out slow. It really got hot out so I was in no real hurry to get back out. Around 4:30, my dad and I set up in am area that I have seen the birds hanging about in durring past afternoons, but nothing showed up. Looking at the amount of tracks (from boots) I figured the place saw alot of first season trafic. Probably pushed the whole flock out of there. I coudnt even find any turkey track's made since the last rain.
Around 6:30, we headed back to the same spot I saw all the birds at in the morning. I thought we could ambush one on its way back to the roost. Got there too late!! As soon as we parked the truck, 4 toms ran acrossed the field in front of us. :o We went around them to the northwest but couldnt get them to come in. Oh well, thats Turkey hunting for ya.
Now I have to wait till friday to get back out again, this is gonna be a long week. :(

That's turkey hunting. I hunt in allegan county and have seen lots of birds. Opening morning found me in field with 3 other hunters. I moved on and saw 6 toms during the morning. Then three more in the afternoon. They all seemed to be hanging out together and not very willing to gobble once they fly down. I am sure with this nice weather that the toms will get cranked up soon. I am glad we have three weeks for this second season.
Good Hunting
