I wanted to here peoples thoughts and stories on these simple little baits. I picked up a 54 piece kit today at Gander in the 1/16oz size for 8 bucks. I've always done well with these for bass and panfish in the spring and summer. I've even seen people catch some small northerns on them on my favorite panfish lake.

So what do you guys think of these? Like them? Love them? Don't care for them? What kind of fish do you get on them? Biggest fish on them? Favorite color? Just thought I'd get some discussion going on a nice bait - Bryon

An excellent walleye bait, at times, if thrown in the correct locations.....

And just where would that be?

I haven't fished a beetlespin since I was a kid... we used to catch everything on them in the neighborhood ponds... bass, bluegills, hybrids, even a few catfish. I once caught a snapping turtle on one as big as a garbage can lid!!!

I caught my first ever northern on one at the age of 3. It was the big size with a yellow split tail and the pike was 28".

Well as your mentor and hero Robert would say "ya can't catch fish if they ain't there".

Mostly skinny water after dark for a starter........

I ain't never caught a dang thing on a beetlespin. So, tell me, what's the key? Straight retrieve? Perhaps let it sink a bit? Should you twitch and pause? It mustn't be any of those for none have worked for me!

One of the most versital baits I have ever used. I have caught lots of different species of fish on them. Trolled or casted has worked good for me.

I have taken just about everything from bluegills, pike, bass, and even catfish on a 1/8 oz in green/black or the 1/4 oz in yellow/black beetle spin. I always have several in my box at all times.

Im glad this lure was mentioned so I can put some in my kids tackle box. Its an easy lure to use that produces.

Yellow with black stripes is the best color I've ever used. Have caught probably thousands of fish on them, gills, rockbass, crappies, largemouths, pike, perch. My brother even "caught" a huge carp on one, had it on for about 20 minutes and lost it right next to him, straightened the hook out. Best method is to cast and retrieve, slow enough that you are not dragging bottom. Or, troll over a weed flat at the lowest speed possible.

I never start with a roostertail, but it is my for sure go to when nothing else seems to work. My buddies and I had our annual pike trip on a local lake 2 weekends ago, a lake that all I bring are a particular roostertail. Score? Me: 6 pike. My friends (5 other guys): 0

Heck ya! The Beetle spin is a great classic that has always been a fish catcher. If it swims, they'll eat it. Buddy caught steelhead on them a couple years back. I use them all in all colors. Give them to my girlfriend to use because they take no special skill to fish and they catch fish, keeping her from getting bored.

Can't go wrong with them imo.

Amen to the spin's fish catching ability. I think it will catch just about any freshwater fish that swims, yellow, red, and fluorescent yellow are my favorite colors... I usually substitute a heavier jig head to get it down easier and faster, that works for me...

Well thanks to this thread I went out and picked up a couple beetle spins. Today I decided to try them out in my pond and proceeded to catch a 19" walleye on my 2nd cast. Another lure I gotta stock up on :)
