I am not sure what they are but I found hundreds of them a few days ago under a few large ash trees.

I wouldn't have the foggiest idea. I know there are some guys that are really good at alot of different shrooms that are more complicated though. What did the gills look like and what color were they? Looks like LBM's to me. In other words little brown mushrooms that I can't identify:lol:

gill side was smooth. These appear to be an orangish color (I'm color blind so that's a total guess. They could be green for all I know). BUT, others nearby that appear to have "run their course" have turned a dark purple or black (again, the color blind thing).

thats a sign of an inky cap type mushroom (includes micas)

I see them in several of my morel spots and have been told they are poisen.
Last year I had morels growing right in with them around a dead elm, I didnt pick any that touched each other.

They look like mica caps to me- Coprinus Micaceas they are edible - I have eaten them before - not a lot of taste and they get watery when you cook them - Do not eat them when consuming alcohol. They contain the same chemicals as the drug Anabuse - given to alcoholics - they become violently ill when they drink alcohol. If you do venture to eat them they need to be very fresh.
