How often can you say good things about our Department of Natural Resources? I attended a hunter safety course with my wife a couple years ago so she could go hunting with me. When we got to turkey hunting, the instructor explained that turkey hunters should not use or wear blue or red clothing and equipment because another hunter may mistake you for a turkey. Makes perfect sense right? That is until I bought my 98 turkey license and saw the kill tag was blue and then again in 99 the kill tag was red! I am happy to see the agency removed their head from their rear for a quick gasp of air and supplied us with green kill tags this year. How often do they do something that actually makes sense? In all seriousness, I am impressed with their efforts (along with the efforts of hunters and hunter dollars) to reestablish a huntable flock in the state of Michigan, and because of this, we got lucky enough to put a couple of birds in the freezer this week! What are your guys thoughts on the DNR and our turkeys?

HN- I think the DNR was thinking the brighter the better, so they could identify there was a kill tag on the bird. Maybe orange would be better. Color is much more important when you are motionless and calling, this would be your highest chance of being shot. Once the kill is done there should be no more calling and usually you would be making alot more noise exiting the woods, Hence safer

If you have a bird slung over shoulder and walking out of the woods with it,I think the last thing I would be concerned about would be the color of the tag. Now the bird itself would be your biggest danger. If the tag color is your concern, wrap your hands around the tag when you walk out.

Whistle as you walk, be happy, you just bagged a great bird.

Good Luck!
