Well I finally got into some morels in oakland county. I have been looking every time I take the dog out to run her in the woods and yet to find any. Well yesterday a buddy and I went to a spot we thought would be better and we hit the good. 33 morels weighing in at just over 3 lbs. The biggest are 9" and 8" looks like this is a new honey hole as it must be overlooked by everyone else. Now some look like they are starting to get eaten is this still ok just cut away the bad? and also it looks as though some are starting to lose the ridges on the outside maybe just the end of the season? Also I didn't get a really good pic but I think I have 2 different kinds all look the same except 1 (middle row, second from the right). Not sure if there is a difference between grey's and yellows? Anyway I am hooked now that I know I have a spot.

First timer. Is that bad? Should I cut just like asparagus? Not really sure about them as this is the first year I have went out looking. Really just started when I found out they could be down in my area and gave me a reason to be out in the woods, Not like I needed one anyways. I did use an onion bag so the spores could disperse but didn't know that they regrow from bases.

From what I've read, pulling a mushroom up from the ground is likened to breaking the branch of a tree to get to an apple. The mushroom is the fruit and everything under the dirt is the main structure. You have the added benefit of keeping all of that grit out of your other shrooms as well.

As to your earlier question, I believe that greys and yellows are the same, it is just that the yellow ones have been growing longer.

Nice find by the way, they do seem to be on the downslope this way.
