Just curious as to how many calls everyone carries and what variety? Should you have one of each type(slate, box, push, mouth)so you can vary the sounds? And what do you find to be the most effective all around call?

I carry a large variety of calls, box calls, friction calls, mouth calls, wing bone calls, and many locator calls. You just never know what kind of call that they might like to gobble to on that day,and the weather conditions dictate on which calls I might use for the day also. I like using box calls the most and keep a diaphgram in my mouth. My favorite call is a "Peck" Martin chestnut box made with 200 yr. old wood.I also like my old Lynch World Champion box call and a new push pin box call made by "Winky" Hicks.I think a turkey hunter can't go wrong with a good box call and a diaphgram call...SnS

Trout, I see you meantion a duck call as apposed to maybe an owl hooter. I have concidered this as it seems to me it would fit the bill <no pun intended> for a gobble evoker. Have you had any luck?

Carry as many calls that you can, as long as you know how to use them, and it doesn't slow you down for running and gunning. I like friction calls myself... Good Hunting !

Nailer, I carry the ones that you have mentioned. I usually start the game with either a slate, glass or a box call then when I know he's comming in I resort to the mouth call so to have both hands on my gun to be ready for the shot.

I use a slate, box, diaphragm, my mouth, and a gobbler shaker. The slate works best for me. I do want to get one of those push button calls that mount on the barrel of my gun.

maytom99 - I'm most comfortable w/ the slate style calls and I think I have the most control w/ it. I do quite well w/ the diaphragm in the truck, but I'm always worried I'll choke(not literally)when the moment of truth comes and only a squeak will come out. Thanks everyone for the imput.

Nailer, you are right about having more control with the slate/glass types of calls. These are some of my favorite type of calls too. Sometimes it seems that the mouth calls just don't want to work properly after being in your mouth for a while. One thing that I must give them credit for is the ability to make some calls with your both hands on your gun, which when the bird is just out of range but close are worth there weight in gold. Keep trying to get the hang of them, you will be glad you did someday when things just fall into place while using them.

I use a Lohman box call, Knight and Hale
slate call, and an Owl Hooter. Haven't
been able to master a mouth call. Wish I
could master it though because of the
advantage of having your hands free when
the Tom moves in close. When I have tried
a mouth call, it just sounds funny and makes
me gag!!!!
