I'm trying to get confirmation on some turkey knowledge I thought I had at one time and now cannot remember. I believe I had learned that unlike deer, turkey are not territorial and will roam from one area to the next based on food supply or human pressure or even their own security comfort level. Is this true or can someone debunct this for me with an explanation or additional information please?

If this is true it would be critical to scout the location of the turkeys just days before my hunt (I think).

Thanks in advance...

Everything I've read says to scout right up to the day before opening morning, especially for roosts...I've noticed birds to be consistent in their use of certain sandy/dirt roads, certain strutting areas...and in fact one book I have says that if you can locate where toms strut, those areas can be hunted confidently for years to come (?) I don't know if this true...but wooded ridge areas adjacent to grazing pasture seems to be their favorite sort of turf...Good luck

If you can find a couple different struting zones you'll be all set. I love to hunt birds off the roost, but that isn't always practical, when you live 75 miles from where you hunt. I know where birds roost, most of the time, but there's days when I'll go and just get out of my car and listen for a gobble or two. Then the hunt starts, if I know the terrian and got a good idea where the birds are going I've got a 50/50 chance on getting within range, if I'm new too the area, I wait till the birds get down and start moving, then I'll get in position. Either way it's a blast. In the past 8 years, including Iowa, I've taken 11 Toms, 2 off of the roost. Run and gun.....
