Anybody have substantiated info on the claims being made on this forum that Half-Frees are toxic?

I have spent hours looking for this info, so far all I find is hearsay. (and only on this forum)

Anyone care to step up to the plate?

Somebody, anybody?

The half free is edible. However, unless you know the difference between the Morchella Semilibera and the Verpa you should not take a chance. Remember that a half free is attached "halfway" up the stem and the other is attached at the top(like a thimble on an eraser)
Also, when cut in half the "half free" is devoid of cotton like fibers.
So I'd say leave'em be unless you're in the know

A True Half Free Morel is not Toxic, they are edible. Just make sure they are hollow inside and cap is connected. A false one has a solid stem and you can pull the cap right off.

You need a good book. Don't rely on the internet for your health. As I posted in the other thread, I do not have any info that any morchella species is toxic to a normal person who is not prone to allergies.
As for the half-frees, just be 100% positive of the ID, they are very close to a non morel species.

Thanks guys.

I'm sure they are Morchella Semilibera. I am well aware of the traits of the Verpa.

OGM, I'm gonna pick up a field guide and a comprehensive book this week.:)
